“Reading the reviews, I was worried about the service here, but it wasn't nearly as bad as people have posted. Only real concern is that I didn't realize we had to be there by 1900 for check in. Accidently got there right on time. We had the penthouse and the views were spectacular, not to mention the fully equipped kitchen, wrap around deck with glass doors that open up all the way to provide an unobstructed view. Each room and a bathroom so no arguments about space. Private parking is very convenient. In room laundry was great.”
“Mount Backpackers has exceptional staff, great rooms, and a nice environment. The thing that matters in hostels are the people, and when me and my friends arrived, we made several connections and met wonderful people. I want to thank everybody for the time in MT BP, and their amazing staff - especially Miles and Brad (G). If you want to make long lasting connections and friends, go there.”
“Only free car park overnight for NSC. Pretty cool spot, in front of the beach, 2 flush toilets cleaned every day, full of rubbish bins and fresh water. ONLY 8 SPOTS and 2 NIGHTS. Around 7.30pm a security guy checks all cars and plate numbers. You will find some people parking and walking around, some of them a little bit rear but is all good, they just want to have a chat. (It should be prohibited for SC as they have a much bigger spot 5 blocks ahead)”
“Love this place and the host was awesome. He went above and beyond for us all (glen) thank so much”
“Wow, absolutely stunning location. Gorgeous house with lovely host and thoroughly enjoyed the wine tasting, the breakfast arrival basket was a lovely gesture also”
“Excellent staff great atmosphere, nice place to have an ale”
“First time staying here, and was so happy with our stay. Two bedroom apartment was perfect for our stay, plenty of room to relax. Location is great, easy walk to Forsyth Barr through the University and close to lots of food options.”
“cool rooms, can smoke on the deck, flexible and accommodating staff. as far as 3 start places this is a 5 star 3 star”
“I had the pleasure of staying at the Chalet Backpackers for some months a few years ago. My stay left such an impression that I felt compelled to write this review. Met loads of awesome people and wow what an interesting and beautiful building! The owner Richard and administrator Chris were not only friendly and but also great to chat with. I felt thoroughly comfortable and entertained throughout my stay. All in all I couldn't recommend Chalet Backpackers more highly and on my next trip to Dunedin I'll surely spend some more time there :)”
“We had a wonderful stay for my birthday. It’s a beautiful hotel with great staff. Our massage and sauna was excellent at the spa and sitting on the big, open balcony in the evening after a stroll on one of their bush walks was so relaxing. This was made even better by the food. The restaurant is highly recommended, especially for dinner. One of the best we’ve had for years. Can’t wait to return.”
“Rhian Lang, the on-site manager is super helpful, someone who goes an extra mile. The team is very thorough with their check in process. The park although well-located right in front of the shore, it's a pretty 'packed' as they try to squeeze for more occupancy. Very little space allowed in between parking lots hence less privacy.”
“Lovely helpful staff, rooms are well presented and very clean with comfortable beds. Lots of parking available and great location, not far from Go media stadium. Our go-to place to stay when visiting the area!”
“I had a great experience here. The walk from the Intercity Bus stop to the hotel was quick and easy. I noticed upon arrival that there wasn't a ramp to get up, but during my stay upon leaving my room for the night I did notice a ramp. The service was amazing, the vibe of the hotel was really cozy, I ate at the Vie restaurant on the night I arrived, I had a delicious three cheese pizza and a tequila sunrise. I also added the buffet breakfast to my stay, it was very nice, they had a decent array of breakfast foods. The Chia pudding could of used more flavour, as I only got flavour from the fruit. The mushrooms as well could of used a bit more flavour, but other than that every thing else was yummy as!. My room was good, although it had a view of an apartment complex, but that's what you get when you're staying in the middle of the city. The amenities were great, having a coffee bar was good as I always need a coffee. Especially when I come back from a day of walking around the CBD, I can chill and have a coffee. The only confusing thing about the room, is that with the lights, you need to put your hotel keycard in the little slot next to the door, it was confusing for me for about a minute until I figured it out. Another downside I would say is the payment options when you book, so for me I like to pay in advance, they did give that option but you just had to pay the booking fee, and then you pay the rest upon your arrival. I had to email them about this, as when I checked my bank only $100 got taken out, so make sure you have money saved up upon your arrival. Other than that, I had a wonderful stay, thank you to the staff and the cleaning staff for your amazing work, and I hope to come back and stay again another time. - Tiegan C”
“Lovely room with a view across to the rose gardens and very comfortable bed. The staff, especially in the restaurant, were very welcoming and pleasant. Meals were good value for money. All in all, a very pleasant stay.”
“We stayed here in December, 2022. The accommodation was clean & located right at the harbour. Downstairs was a host of fine restaurants and night life. Close to the heart of the city.”
“Look by any means this place is not super flash but I think it’s seriously good value. I stayed for 2 nights at $160 a night in the run up to Xmas. Great location, great price and a great big room with a super comfy bed. Also used the pool which was all ok. Remember to take your room towel as the day I was there none were provided. Lastly check in and staff were all good. Remember people it’s $160 NZD for a massive room in the middle of the city.”
“I stayed for two nights while delivering an event nearby and chose this hotel for its convenient location near the rail station—just outside the city but easy to access. The room was comfortable, the bed very nice, and the overall space well-kept. The property is a combined Novotel and ibis, offering a range of facilities. I also appreciated the separate café area apart from the main restaurant—an excellent spot to relax or work between commitments. Breakfast offered a good variety, and dinners were tasty, though a little on the pricey and smaller side. On Saturday night, the hotel offered a $69 NZD buffet, though I opted for the à la carte menu. The staff were genuinely lovely, and their warmth really made the stay. Overall, a comfortable and friendly stay in a convenient location—with a bit more focus on member recognition, it could be excellent.”
“I traveled to NZ to celebrate turning 50. The Oaks was clean, comfortable, and quiet. Absolutely perfect. The front-end staff members were attentive and exceedingly kind. Connor was the first person I interacted with and proved to be an invaluable resource during my week stay at The Oaks property. The staff provided exceptional service and always with a smile and I would like to put their names in lights.... Calen Dylan Ben Conner Willow Avineet Martyn.....Wonderful recommendation on Mad Pot. Delicious. Thanks for making my 50th one to remember”
“This is a great overall hotel. The service is wonderful, staff friendly , it’s clean and the rooms are nice. The highlight for me was how efficient the aircon was and also how beautiful the lobby/restaurant area. I had breakfast here 3 mornings and the food was very decent. Location is good. Very central and very close to everything in Auckland CBD. The only downside for me is that there is no pool.”

“Perfecto. Staff were awesome. Some noise inside by inconsiderate guests arriving late at night but no noise from outside at all. Location perfect, we flew at 6am. Have stayed probably 4 or 5 x now and have already rebooked for my next trip.”
“Despite our last minute booking at 9pm, it was nice to get the instructions for parking and simple directions to use the shower facilities. We got off the ferry with our motor home at 1am in the morning. And the parking was easy. Lots of spaces for motorhomes in the powered site. Nice clean shower. Everything was neat and well managed. Love it. The lady at the reception I met in the morning was friendly, helpful and nice. Thank you for all the help”
“Everything from check in to check out was on point. Great friendly and helpful staff at the front desk. Helped us with our parking solution promptly and without any hassles. Great food and drinks from the bar, and the staff there were amazing as well. The cleaners kept the room immaculate during our stay. Would definitely stay there again without hesitation.”
“I just got back from a stay at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor, and wow, what a great experience! My room on the 26th level offered amazing views of the city the perfect backdrop for a relaxing getaway. When I checked in, In my room I was welcomed with a complimentary glass bottle and some delicious chocolates, which was such a nice surprise! The room itself was super spacious and spotlessly clean. The bed? Absolutely comfy! I had some of the best sleep I've had in a while, thanks to the cozy bedding. Let’s talk breakfast! The buffet was fantastic. There was so much to choose from, but I have to give a shoutout to the chef for frying my eggs just right and whipping up an omelette that was simply delicious. It really set the tone for a great day. The staff here were friendly and helpful, always there when I needed something. Plus, the hotel is in a prime location, making it easy to explore the area. Overall, my stay at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor was fantastic. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a comfy and enjoyable place to stay in the city.”
“Booked a cabin online and didn't arrive until after gate closed due to late ferry sailing. Owners very obliging and left txt confirmation with entry code. Room was very tidy and clean. Hot shower was bliss! lots of water and hot. Thank you.”
“I highly recommend this holiday park; it offers excellent value for money. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, with everything from the accommodations to the service being of exceptional quality. I will definitely be returning to this location the next time I travel from Auckland to Wellington.”
“We had the most amazing time here and didn’t want to leave! Perfect location just a bus ride into the city which leaves from outside. The room was perfect exactly what we needed and the bed was so comfortable. The food in the restaurant/bar was amazing and extra points for the good Guiness which my partner said was the best one he’s had in New Zealand!! Top class service and hospitality, shoutout to the manager who really engaged with us throughout our trip and who was always up for a chat, he took care of everything we needed throughout our trip and made us feel so welcome. Would definitely recommend staying here to everyone traveling to Christchurch and would love to return again.”
“I arrived in Christchurch on a red-eye flight for a solo trip and was a bit nervous since it was my first time staying in backpacker-style accommodation—especially arriving at 2am. I spent two nights in the all-female pod room and was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was great, with a diverse mix of ages and travellers. The facilities were clean, from the shower and toilet block to the kitchen. It’s also super convenient, with a grocery store, café, and car hire all just a short 2-minute walk away. The staff were wonderful—relaxed, friendly, and very accommodating. I’d definitely stay here again, especially for late-night or early-morning flights. Downside: Pod aircons could do with a service. Mine was a little noisy and struggling to cool my pod (This is the only reason why I did not rate the room 5 stars) I can sleep through the aircon but if your a light sleeper, I’d recommend booking a private room rather than a shared room.”
“I had a really pleasant stay here. The check-in and check-out process was super easy and efficient — staff were friendly and helpful throughout. The room was clean, comfortable, and had everything I needed for a short stay. Parking can be a bit tricky, so it’s worth planning ahead. If you don’t want to spend too much on parking, be prepared to park about a 10-minute walk away. Centre Place offers $10 parking if you register in advance, which is a great option. Overall, a great value hotel in a convenient location — I’d definitely stay again!”
