Just be warned of loud club music and voices, which went to midnight, and which will compromise your sleep if you want an early night. I reckon I could have coped with the βpungentβ bedding had it not been for the noise. Also, the kitchen/fridge is not accessible between 10 pm and 5 am, so if youβre leaving early, have your foodstuffs at hand. The fridge, actually, was so packed that I found it a challenge just to get a couple of oranges and a wee carton of milk in there. In the outside βdining roomβ, one rubs up against drying wetsuits, washing and bicycles and the tiny βliving roomβ appears to house all types of night activity. Last but not least, watch out when youβre at the bathroom hand basins: if the door is not pulled to, your ablutions are there for all to witness! Overall, a very bad experience so, if you can, I urge you to band together to find something better.

Eh it's okay for one night but definitely could be improved. Could feel the springs in the bed, wasn't very comfortable. Room didn't feel too secure and was quite noisy at night, though this is more down to the guests staying rather than the hostel. Staff were friendly though, it was clean and the location is good, so still gonna give it a 4/5. It's good for a one night stay but I wouldn't have wanted to stay there for longer.

I have stayed a second time now and still bad. When I first checked in the owner had a go at me for leaving a not best review last time. She tried to decline me on the spot but it was emergency accommodation for the night. The bathrooms were just as bad as I remember, holes in the walls and more the room was so stuffy when I first walked in there like windows hadnβt been opened in days and the bed I could feel the springs in the mattress and the duvets had dust on them It says on a poster when you go up the stairs quiet time is from 10:30pm and at 12:30am and 2 am there were people in the hallway making so much noise I had to end up putting my ear plugs in just so I could get some sleep. Also when I went to check in yesterday it says check in from 2pm and I got there just a tad after 2 to check in as I had appointments and they were not friendly about it. Next time Iβll just be going somewhere else if my normal place I stay isnβt available.

We had booked 3 nights. When we arrived, we found out about the 14-bed dormitory where the beds were extremely close together, where the smell of the dormitory was unbearable, and where the state of the bathrooms was truly disgusting... We immediately asked to cancel our next 2 nights, but we only received a refund for 1 night.

Mount Backpackers has exceptional staff, great rooms, and a nice environment. The thing that matters in hostels are the people, and when me and my friends arrived, we made several connections and met wonderful people. I want to thank everybody for the time in MT BP, and their amazing staff - especially Miles and Brad (G). If you want to make long lasting connections and friends, go there.

Hey ! I stayed at the hostel: super nice ! It's a very good hostel ! It's not too big, so it's much easier to meet new people! I was also in the Pacific coast lodge, it's very nice, big and super clean, but I prefer Mount Backpackers because it's more familial! I tried surfing: super super nice ! They have everything for the beginners and the prices are super honest ! Boards are perfect to learn !

This place has a great location and the people, and staff are very lovely. But unfortunately for me the party vibe of central Mt Maunginui wasn't ideal. The hostel is definitely has a certain vibe that would either work for you or not. It wasn't for me but I know for others it would be amazing. The bathrooms and kitchen were a bit small but this wasn't the main reason I decided not to stay for another week.

Great location, nice people, poor facilities and overpriced in my opinion. Common areas are cramped, in poor condition, and leave your hands feeling sticky. The dorm room was quite clean, though my linens were quite worn and had some holes. There is one set of bathrooms for the whole place, and the sinks are open and right at the front of the living room, so no private place to wash your face, pick your teeth, etc. Directly across the street from a late night bar, so bring earplugs if you wanna sleep before 1:30am.
