Chalet Backpackers – A solid, charming base in Dunedin Chalet Backpackers was my first stop when I arrived in Dunedin for my studies back in 2017. It’s not luxury – but for the price, it was absolutely fair. The rooms and furnishings were a bit older, but everything was clean and functional. The building itself has a certain old-world charm, with a slightly quirky and winding layout that adds character. It’s easy to get a bit turned around inside at first, but that’s part of the experience. All in all, a reliable and budget-friendly place to stay. Not perfect, but definitely a good starting point in Dunedin.

Chalet Backpackers is a really amazing hostel. It has a full kitchen, a music/pool table room, a TV lounge area with a Playstation, a library, and a balcony with an amazing view of Dunedin. It could definitely use some repairs here and there, but it's great to stay short or long. I liked that it had plenty of public parking spaces near it so you could drive there without having to walk far after parking. Probably the best hostel in Dunedin, it had such a home-like feel and great pricing for a hostel. Would definitely stay here again!

It was a good 3 nights I had and wished I stayed more, the receptionist (I've forgotten her name) was lovely to deal with and made myself at home especially the guests, if any issues arose she would resolve them promptly. Highly recommend this Hostel if you're making tracks up to Christchurch.

Difficult place to give a review. Place is super clean and well maintained even as the facilities are quite old. On the other side, the beds are normal beds without privacy shades, personal lamps or electro outlets.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Chalet Backpackers for some months a few years ago. My stay left such an impression that I felt compelled to write this review. Met loads of awesome people and wow what an interesting and beautiful building! The owner Richard and administrator Chris were not only friendly and but also great to chat with. I felt thoroughly comfortable and entertained throughout my stay. All in all I couldn't recommend Chalet Backpackers more highly and on my next trip to Dunedin I'll surely spend some more time there :)

I have booked this place for a few days until I find a room for me in the city. The place is so nice and the facilities are good. Price is the lowest if you check other places around here. The kitchen has a lot of utensils and the facilities to cook. Enough storage space and the refrigerators. Bathrooms and the toilets are very clean. Their staff is doing the job very well. The staff and the owner are very friendly. They provide all the information you need. I could not find another place to move within the planned period. The owner of this place has offered me the same room I stayed for one more week for a great rate. This place can be highly recommended.

While quite dated, this backpackers offers good value. I stayed in a private single room which was clean and comfortable. I appreciated having a little desk in the room and plenty of space for my belongings. The bathroom was a little inconvenient with a bath-based shower but this is a function of the building’s age - but a heads up to those with accessibility issues. There’s also no lift as far as I could tell. Also note it’s $2 to have a towel. The staff were friendly and I encountered no issues staying here.

We spent 3 nights here and were very happy with the stay for the price! I loved the old fashioned carpeting and character of the place, and we made good use of the pool room. If you don’t like larger backpackers maybe avoid, but we found it great. Good location too!

I really enjoyed my experience here, the receptionist was very helpful and the building was amazing. Loved the old style of everything, the kitchen was really cool. Also not far from the CBD, quick 5-10 mins walk but not far. Would recommend!!

I didn’t get a good feeling of the place when I arrived. It was very quiet, and just felt weird, spooky. Later on I was told it used to be a hospital and there’s some spiritual activity going on. I normally don’t believe those things but could perhaps explain my bad feeling. Apart from that, the house is quite old, doors and beds made a lot of noise so it was hard to sleep well. It could also be cleaner. It’s probably still good value for money in Dunedin though, and the staff is helpful.
