The Alcala Motel is a great place to stay and I highly recommend it if youβre heading to Dunedin for any length of time. Sure, the rooms are a little dated, but thatβs reflected in the price - and they are warm and comfortable with everything you will need. You get an incredibly comfortable bed, a fully stocked kitchen, a quiet and convenient location (with a 24 hour Night and Day store just across the road), and amazing service with little extras like a morning newspaper (complimentary!) and laundry facilities. I was worried it might be a little noisy as it was on a Main Street but that wasnβt an issue. Gary and the team are absolutely lovely and the service is amazing. Honestly, it was a lovely place to stay and I will be back next time Iβm in Dunedin.

A quiet hotel in a lively area, located just a 10-minute walk from the city center. Surrounded by halal restaurants, the suites are spacious and equipped with all daily necessities. We stayed there for one night on our way to Christchurch.

Really big suite with an additional two single beds on the mezzanine floor. Had everything we needed including a small kitchen. Location was great for local restaurants and Emerson brewery which we visited on both nights. The main CBD is an easy walk along George Street. Would definitely recommend this motel.

Great location and service. But due for a room refurb. The stairs to the top level of the split level rooms aren't suitable for kids under 7 I would say (dodgy design). Old school blanket slips etc. Cheap price though, can't beat the price for a family of 5.

Good location, service was good as well. Room was very dated and worn. The stairs to the loft were small and steep, almost ladder like so wouldn't be good for someone with mobility issues or for someone who needs to get up in the middle of the night to go to the washroom. Room was large though, and an easy walk to restaurants.

Nice motel, slightly old fashioned but close to the stadium and the Octagon. Nice and clean. Good price. Only down side, small TV up too high and shower over bath.

Bubbly reception but room out dated chipped paint mold dark cold and dingy. We arrived on a very cold windy wet night and the door was open no heading on windows open musty smell inside. Poor water flow and high step in shower over bath. Never again.

Eww found half eaten McDonald's in the freezer box. Got plates out to put food on but found them with baked on food yuk. Oh well have a shower waste of time there was absolutely no pressure and the cleanliness of the place was lacking. Not expensive but way to expensive when you have to wash the dishes before you eat off them and you can pee harder than the shower.

As you would expect from the photos, the Alcala is incredibly dated. But if you're just looking for a warm place to stay, then dΓ©cor doesn't really matter. General maintenance seems to have been neglected. There are poorly patched holes in the walls, wobbly stairs to a creaky mezzanine floor bedroom - which has no curtains so you're up at dawn. The bathroom is stained, paint is peeling, and the windows are always wet. We were advised at check-in that the heating didn't work and we were provided a plug in electric heater. This was sufficient to heat the space. The water pressure was poor, and the tub was stained. However - the beds were comfortable, the heater warmed the large space, and it was adequate for our stay (family of 5). We had a double and a single bed downstairs, and two singles up on the mezzanine. Note - the mezzanine floor is NOT accessible to anyone with any mobility issues. Service was good, the room was cleaned while we were out and about. The lack of maintenance made it look a bit dirty, but it seemed clean on closer inspection. Free wifi has adequate range and speed. I wouldn't book again, unfortunately. I think there are more modern alternatives in this price range.
