“To be honest I wasn't expecting much from our stay, expected just a simple night stop with no frills. Rooms and bathrooms were surprisingly kept at a good standard, clean and well maintained. The term "don't judge a book from its cover" very well applies here. Much to add the the hotel is a pet project of the owner to as his goal is to develop an aging hotel and turn it into a must stop motel, so note on further improvements in the upcoming months. To share a funny experience we had our carkeys accidently locked in while unpacking, but the owner/manager Ken went over mountains to help us by calling for help and making sure our stay was fun and pleasant. And to even invite us to Karaoke night at the bar downstairs with the locals which we had a blast with. Final thoughts - I would definitely make sure to make this part of my road trip route the next time I visit NZ. The locals, hotel, and owner all of them made our stop unexpectedly fun and vibrant.”

Close to the quaint Portobello Village with pub, cafes and restaurants as well as easy drive to Penguin Place, Monarch Cruise and Albatross Centre. Comfortable bed, big bath, well equipped with everything you need. Shaun is a wonderful host, very welcoming and informative about the local area. Would definitely recommend and stay again. Loved the bird table and birds that came to visit.”
