“Such a lovely stay. Rooms are comfortable and furnished well. So much more personality than a hotel or motel. Consider splurging for the room with the king bed and porch - it’s so nice to enjoy the city skyline at night. The manager was incredibly personable. A perfect option and so glad we found it.”
“Makara Beach Cafe (Wharekai) is a special place. It’s in one of the wildest parts of New Zealand. The cafe is open Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays (subject to management’s discretion) from 11am till 5pm (again… it can change!!). It’s actually a really hard place to run a cafe because of its location. You either drive through Takarau Gorge (a narrow, winding road through an active fault from Johnsonville), or Makara Road via Karori (more friendly for inexperienced drivers). While only 15-20 minutes from the city, it is considered remote. There is very little infrastructure out there. No town water services exist, there is a public toilet block with 2 loos and a change room. They are connected to a septic system and there is no drinkable public water supply (byo or buy one at the cafe). Everyone working here is a local resident. The current proprietors have dedicated their lives to serving their community. They are the local posties, working 7 days a week…. Ronnie and Mark decided to take up the lease of the cafe post-covid. There is nothing else anywhere nearby. The nearby Makara Beach walkway is the busiest public recreational walking track in the whole Wellington Region! Ronnie, once the catering manager with Cook Strait ferries, brings her epic culinary skills to creating and cooking everything on the menu personally, in a very small kitchen. She batters the fish as ordered, making some of the freshest and most delicious fish and chips you will ever have. Her Lasagne is legendary, Toasties are a very popular mainstay (if you are Coeliac, you can even have a Gluten Free toastie!!!). The Big Beefy Burger is always a winner after doing an epic walk to the gun emplacements. I personally can’t get enough of the Bacon and Egg Butties! Ronnie has an extensive menu, catering for all tastes and levels of hunger, including those of our most precious Tamariki (children). The cafe’s busy-ness is directly linked to weather conditions and time of the year. On a sunny day with little wind, you can guarantee the Makara Beach area will be very busy. It is advisable to take this into consideration when trying to park, use the bathrooms and the cafe. Obviously, you may need to wait for services.. including the toilets!!! Perhaps consider whether you should visit the area on such days if you are likely to be frustrated by waiting in queues. The services here are provided by Wellington Council. It is almost impossible to consistently predict the numbers of visitors to the area and visitors need to plan accordingly. This can result in the cafe being closed with little warning if the weather is terrible. There is very little shelter outside the cafe. During summer’s hot days please ensure you have sufficient water, sun cream, hats and shelters. Also respect the residents and the animals (including the recently released Kiwi) who reside there. Park in allocated spaces along Makara Road or in the carpark behind the toilets. Don’t block driveways or the boat ramp access or park on septic tanks and planted areas. Don’t use people’s homes as a urinal and please dispose of your rubbish in the bins provided. Ronnie, Mark and staff do everything they can to make the best food and drinks, and provide the best experience possible for visitors. Their hearts are in everything they do, stop by for a chat and say hi!”
“The surroundings are austere, but the food is outstanding - if you are a meat eater (they also have a wide rage of vegetarian dishes) I would recommend the Brisket, it has a touch of aniseed, and would be my personal favourite if it wasn't for the Spicy Ribs, they make my jaw lock just thinking about them. The Orange Beef is good and the deep fried Squid is to die for. There wouldn't be a food establishment in Wellington or probably NZ where you can get great food and great service for $20 a dish. I recommend you go with a few friends, select a dish each and share - you won't be disappointed.”
“We had a wonderful experience. It was a very nice, spacious room with great amenities. We were lucky enough to have been given a room upgrade. Great location within walking distance to a lot of different things (beach, museum, markets, Courtney Place, Cuba street).”
“I come here professionally as The Cat Carer. One of the services I offer is cat transport. I have brought many clients and their cats here. My clients are always happy and can't speak highly enough about the vets here, especially Kiki. The vet nurses here are wonderful especially Juli, who I've had many great interactions with.”
“"I recently dined at Curry 2 Go in Petone, and despite the lengthy wait (understandable for a one-man operation), the experience was well worth it! The Kiwi butter chicken was delectable and succulent. I also tried the tandoori prawn for the first time, which was incredibly tasty. However, my delight quickly turned to discomfort due to a sudden and urgent need for a bathroom break. Overall, I highly recommend Curry 2 Go - 10/10! The quality and flavor of the food outweighed any minor inconvenience. I'll definitely return soon."”
“Amazing food, great service and so affordable. A really great dining experience. Interesting chat with the tutors of the students too. They are doing great work. Well done everyone!”
“Friendly owners with good full of flavour, the highlight was the spicy noodles which were cooked al dente and the pork Chinese burgers which was packed full of flavour”
“Our room was clean, modern, and had everything we needed. It's a busy area but still quiet. Walking distance to a really nice mall and McDonald's. The people running it are very nice and helpful. I definetly recommend staying here. We used points to stay, but the regular price is really good!!!!”
“Great overnight stay. Surprisingly quiet given how busy the Street is. (I'm a light sleeper too). Everything needed was in the little cottage. The coffee plunger was a nice treat and appreciated. Thankyou.”
“Went there for our final visit with our lovely cat. The staff member was very helpful and very understanding at this sad time for us. We felt respected and values and they took time to let us grieve without rushing us out the door. Prices weren't too bad either. Will go back if we decide to get another animal eventually.”
“Great motel close walking distance to shops and supper market clean and tidy unit very little road noise thanks Asure Kaimai View Motel”
“Absolutely amazing with my Galah. Was a little anxious taking him as it is hard to find a vet good with exotic birds. The team here, we're awesome, they may need ear plugs next time though as he was not happy. Thoroughly professional and gentle with Syd”
“Fantastic vets. Very professional services. Lots of time spent explaining treatments, great knowledge and skills. They are very kind and caring towards both humans and animals!”
“Very nicely appointed rooms. I don't tend to fall asleep easily but the bed, pillows, and linen were perfection and I slept better than I have in months. Location is great, a very short walk to shops, eateries etc... Bonus points for the fair trade hot drink provisions and the Forest and Bird toiletry products. Definitely recommend and would absolutely stay here again.”
“I took my cat Indie there for a dental a few months back and she was so calm in the consult room and the vet was very attentive and made her feel at ease. I will definitely be taking her back!”
“Nice facility, good spacious rooms, amazing hot tub/pool area”
“Finally found our new coffee place since moving to Taradale. If you are after a nice coffee and a snack, this is 100% the place to go. Great staff were very welcoming and attentive, had a cappuccino and Apple and Blueberry Muffin (best blueberry Muffin I've had in Hawkes Bay) to share with my partner in the nearby park. Looking forward to our new weekend ritual.”
“Great spot on the beach for a coffee and some food. Very friendly staff.”
“Karaoke on a Friday night!! Lots of fun”
“Our pets Dr, great team, patient, caring, none better!”
“Dennis was very accomodating for my group of friends and I who made arrangements over the phone for multiple rooms 18 months out from the Mission concert. Very grateful and were all really impressed with the spacious rooms and facilities. Thank you so much again!”

“We stayed here for one night and it was very comfortable. Location is good, free parking space. My rental car broke down when checking out and had difficulty communicating with the car rental company. Thanks very much for the service staff's attentive assistance. I was very touched. It was the best memory of our 21-day trip to New Zealand. Very friendly to tourists”
“Stay here regularly for work trips. Rooms are always clean and tidy and warm enough if you're want. Bathroom clean and showers are great. Owners are super friendly. Plenty of restaurants and takeaways within talking distance. Always recommend to friends, colleagues and customers to stay there”
“Great value for money. Stayed 3 nights. The room was cleaned and tidy. The staff was so friendly.”
“We only stayed one night, were wishing we had booked for longer! Was a neat tidy unit, heater was on when we got there which was nice......we were late with our arrival and they couldn't have been more understanding. Rural location, really quiet, no light coming into room at night and pet friendly!! Cutest receptionist ever, thank you Mr Darcy. Would happily go back and recommend.”
“I love this vet clinic. I have taken Pickle to see Chris, KV and a few temps and all the vets have been fantastic. Very caring, give honest advice and don't overcharge. Rachael and the nurses are also very lovely to deal with. I highly recommend.”
“⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Our stay at Quest Mt Eden was outstanding! The apartment was incredibly spacious, immaculately clean, and so well thought out—everything we needed was right at our fingertips. The layout was efficient and comfortable, making it easy to settle in and feel at home. The location is also ideal—close to Auckland City’s attractions, dining, and entertainment, yet peaceful and quiet at night. A special mention to the front office reception team who were genuinely friendly, welcoming, and super helpful throughout our stay. Highly recommend this place for anyone visiting Auckland!”
“We love Bruce and the nurses at North Harbour vet!!! Caring, understanding, experienced and professional staff who are willing to help you out and provide the best service for your animal friend :)”
