“Johnny's Steakhouse deserves it's 5 star rating from me as I have dined there many times and the food and service is consistent. The food quality always great and so when you take a friend there that you have recommended Johnny's to, you will not be disappointed. They won't let you down, especially Manoj ... The best thing about Fridays at Johhny's is that they are open from 11am making Steaks for lunchtime a perfect place to go. My friend Jim was so impressed he has placed a review after today making me realise I should too. I have posted photos from today and the same meals order over a couple of years showing the consistency of quality. Regards Eric”

The chicken and squid karaage had the perfect balance of crunch and tenderness, while the egg and potato salad was a particularly inspired compliment. “Good spacious cafe and bar with great cabinet selection. However, the product and display's name were inconsistent so we ordered the wrong thing (we looked at the name). Ordered a mocha but it was so bitter, not my taste personally. The staff was friendly.”

“It's like stepping into a little pocket of Japan. I really enjoy the slower pace of this place. And ordering a few things at a time. They have a top 5 recommended skewers list, and I'd have to second it. The only other thing I'd add is the beef tongue and the grilled rice balls. The latter has such an interesting texture when grilled. The karaage is also a classic must have, as well as the beef tataki. I've also tried the gingko nuts and it's quite the interesting flavour and texture - worth trying once. Though Google tells me I shouldn't eat more than 7 of these nuts in a day... Great sake and classic Japanese beer options. And a very cosy ambience. If you're not a big group, would recommend sitting by the kitchen. Always fun to watch them grill.”

“Weekday lunches are guaranteed at this restaurant, which is conveniently located next to a sushi shop. I frequently visit with my colleagues for a slightly upscale lunch. The average price range is around $21, making it a bit expensive, but the consistently recommended food quality and quantity make it worthwhile and fulfilling. Personally, I enjoy their crispy chicken with rice and braised pork belly on rice.”

“Hands down favourite dumplings in the whole wide world has to be the pork and chive in spicy sauce. Their ‘hot’ is not to be underestimated, but even though it burns a little for me it’s well worth it. Dan dan noodles a nice accompaniment to the dumplings but not a must. Portion sizes are huge so always go for the Small if in doubt. Fell in love with the original Basu Lounge in Takapuna but I really rate their Browns Bay location more.”

“Selected the tasting menu which was superb, the staff had a great knowledge of the plates they were serving, each course was a delight. Going with the tasting option gave us the opportunity to sample the dishes we wouldn't ordinarily select. Learnt some fantastic new palate and flavor mixes. The head chef visited us and personally grated the fresh Christchurch Truffle which was amazing. All in all we can't fault the experience. Pricey yes but well worth it.
