“Incredible work by the OPERA! During our tour they explained us how they started it and they work towards the conservation of penguins and andemic wildlife in general. It goes from replanting trees to having a rehabilitation center for yellow eyed penguins. It is a great location if you want to spot little blue penguins, fur seals and sea lions without bothering them. And because of the rehabilitation center you have the chance to be close to yellow eyed penguins as well.”

    Lower Huia Pump Station

    ★★★★☆ 4.6 Open

“The Lower Huia Dam is about a 40-minute drive from Auckland and makes a nice short trip into the Waitākere Ranges. From the carpark, it’s an easy walk to the reservoir area. The surroundings are peaceful, with farmland and hills nearby, and sometimes sheep grazing in the fields. The highlight is the bellmouth spillway — a rare circular overflow structure that looks like a giant vertical funnel. It’s quite impressive to see in person and not something you often come across in New Zealand. The dam top also gives good views of the lake and surrounding hills. It’s generally very quiet, and we hardly saw other visitors during our walk. On a rainy day, the atmosphere felt fresh and calm, and the whole place had a very tranquil vibe. Worth a stop if you’re exploring the west coast or the Waitākere Ranges.”

“Two years ago, Spiga was the place where we had our first date. Now, as a married couple, we returned for lunch, and it was just as wonderful as we remembered. The cozy atmosphere, delicious food, and exceptional service made it a truly special experience. Fungi Pizza was absolutely incredible—hands down the best fungi pizza in Auckland! The crust was perfectly crispy, and the mushrooms were so fresh and flavorful. We were so impressed that we asked the staff where they sourced their mushrooms. They were incredibly friendly and took the time to explain everything in detail, which made the experience even more enjoyable. We can’t wait to come back and create more beautiful memories here.”

I had a slow cooked pork belly on mash with fresh salad. The meal was very generous in size and I was sorry when I had finished despite being unable to eat anything else cos I was very full! “Shop: open, spacious, clean Staff: friendly and patient to explain the different options and self-service system Sushi: There are plenty of options from fresh salmon and tuna to inari pockets and fried chicken nigiri Personally, I don't eat raw fish, so this place is great with their different cooked fish/fried chicken/fried shrimp options. There's also a fried food snack cabinet if you're craving a little something extra minus the carbs. The tamagoyaki sushi was absolutely en pointe, and the tuna inari pocket was a burst of flavours - sweet, salty umami all at once! Price: it depends on what sushi you get. They have a pricelist available. (Photo -$6; huge tasty sushi!) Wheelchair accessible and available on 4 delivery apps! They also have a platter option if you're planning for a party. I highly recommend it and would definitely be back for more!”

    Gemmayze Street

    ★★★★☆ 4.6 Closed

“⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Now I understand why Gemmayze Street was voted No.1 — this place is outstanding! The chicken shish is hands down the best I’ve ever had: juicy, full of flavour, and perfectly cooked. The saffron rice with raisin, walnut, and a touch of sour creamy sauce is absolutely delicious — a perfect balance of sweet, nutty, and creamy. The hummus is also a standout. It has a flavour that reminds me of Sichuan chili, but without the heat — super unique and addictive. The lamb was decent, pretty standard compared to everything else. I also tried their new dessert — it was okay, just not quite my taste. Overall, a fantastic experience and a must-try if you’re in the area!”

“I just finished going up mount Eden and was hungry. Found this place nearby. It's a fairly small place. Seats about 25. Nice, subtle decor. Got the steamed duck #38, with coconut rice. I was hoping for thai tea but they had run out. It took about a half hour to be served. I'm going to assume it was made to order, it was that good. Nicely presented in a shaped dish. I recommend Basil Thai, make reservations!”
