“Great food and very fast service. It's smaller than most cafes inside of Palmers so does get full quick during peak times. Great spot for people that love avocado as they are always generous with any dish that has it. Nice spot for an afternoon catchup in the sun.”

“A lovely cafe on Jackson St with heaps of cabinet food and full menu available. Portions are huge so do take that into consideration if you’re a light eater. Daily specials are often changing on the blackboard. Extremely friendly service and dogs are allowed at the rear of the cafe. It does get busy on weekend mornings so bookings are essential. Lots of parking but be prepared for a wee stroll if it’s busy.”

“Unbelievable cafe! Super busy though so plan to wait, but totally worth the wait. Staff are amazing at juggling tables and customers, a very well run team. Amazing food! I got the big breakfast and added hollandaise, a Vienna coffee and takeaway too as coffee was so good! Hands down one of the best cafes around. Plus it’s on the beach so you can go for a walk on beach afterwards! Will be back for-sure!”

“A wonderful birthday lunch at Picnic! I cannot thank Picnic Cafe enough for an absolutely fabulous 70th birthday lunch! It was Wellington on a good day and the roses were in full bloom. This is such a fantastic venue for Welly locals and especially for visitors. The service was outstanding with the manager and his staff graciously, attentively and very efficiently accommodating 26 exuberant family and friends. It worked beautifully for the group that each could select what they wanted for lunch and the atmosphere was relaxed and, well, picnic-y. It couldn't have been better! Highly recommended. Thank you to Paul Lester and J Paul and Picnic! Mary Dec 2025”

Their bakery items are divine, each bite of their flaky, buttery pastries transported us to a state of bliss. We particularly loved their signature sourdough bread—crusty on the outside, soft and airy on the inside, it's a testament to the skill and passion behind their baking. The cafe menu is equally impressive, featuring a wonderful array of dishes that are both innovative and comforting. “Have visited this café many times in the past and it's always been good. Their drinks are nice and hot and the cabinet and cooked food is great. I think the scones are especially nice here. I have never had an issue finding a table but it does get popular for business meetings, so if you go around lunch time it may be busy”
