I thought we had reserved a place but it turns out that none of us had. Despite it being a busy time, the front of house found a table for 10 of us and made us feel very welcome. Food was good with a variety of dishes being served quickly so we could eat at the same time. The cabinet food looked good too although we ordered off the menu. Top marks for service and for food

A wonderful birthday lunch at Picnic! I cannot thank Picnic Cafe enough for an absolutely fabulous 70th birthday lunch! It was Wellington on a good day and the roses were in full bloom. This is such a fantastic venue for Welly locals and especially for visitors. The service was outstanding with the manager and his staff graciously, attentively and very efficiently accommodating 26 exuberant family and friends. It worked beautifully for the group that each could select what they wanted for lunch and the atmosphere was relaxed and, well, picnic-y. It couldn't have been better! Highly recommended. Thank you to Paul Lester and J Paul and Picnic! Mary Dec 2025

We took our grandson for lunch there after walking around the Botanic Gardens. The service was great and I had the seafood chowder which was fantastic, tasted great and was full of seafood. There was good food for our grandson as well.

Great coffee (and food) awaits in the Botanic gardens at Picnic Cafe. Being next to the Begonia house it’s like a conservatory with full length windows looking into the rose gardens. Excellent food and friendly attentive staff - you must visit soon! Warm and cosy on this rainy spring day. Also pics from previous visits.

Excellent brunch cafe here in the Wellington Botanic Gardens! Great convenient venue, we were walking the city to sea walkway when we stopped by. We received fabulous service from the enthusiastic and charismatic blonde guy who knew all the good things to get, and was the right level of attentive! Food was delicious & filling. The only other feedback I’d give is that there was a closed mussel in our chowder and bits of shell, which you’d expect all 3 of your mussels to be open when you pay $30 a bowl, which was otherwise spot on. The house smoked salmon salad nicoise was incredible. We highly recommend both dishes! We will be back again :)

Absolutely delicious soup for lunch today. A delightful place to rest and revive on the walk down from the cable car. A large menu full of choices..so many choices. The coffee is good too

This is a great Cafe. They are often very busy, but they are extremely well organised. Even though it was fairly full when we got there, ordering didn't take too long, they found us a table and our drinks then meals were served relatively quickly. The food was excellent. And of course, the best part is this is set in lovely botanic gardens.

It was a really nice place to have lunch. You order and get a number, and then your food/drinks are brought to you. The creamy mushroom medley in particular was delicious. There was a bit of a queue when we arrived, but it moved quickly.
