WΔ“tā Cave is a must-visit in Wellington for anyone interested in Hollywood movies and the magic behind them. The experience offers an incredible behind-the-scenes look at how iconic Hollywood films are brought to life, with detailed props, costumes, models, and displays showcasing the craftsmanship and creativity involved. Seeing the level of detail up close gives you a whole new appreciation for what goes into blockbuster filmmaking. The atmosphere is relaxed yet inspiring, and the staff are passionate and knowledgeable, happily sharing insights and stories from major film productions. It’s an easy and enjoyable stop while exploring Wellington or the Miramar area, and the overall experience feels immersive and well worth the ticket. The store is also a highlight, packed with unique collectibles and memorabilia. If you love Hollywood films or creative storytelling, WΔ“tā Cave is an experience you shouldn’t miss

I was a bit disappointed with the 90minute tour. You go through some different rooms (I believe it was 6 in total). You get to hear some of the history and how the founders grew up, met and started their business, which was interesting. In the first room you can see for what movies they’ve made props for and then there’s some different props from different movies to have a look at, but you’re not allowed to touch them or take pictures (cause of copyright). In the next room you get to watch a short movie about how masks are made, which was my fav part of the tour. After that you get in another room where you get to touch some materials and look at more props from more movies, plus you get to see/watch some people work on swords/with a 3D printer. After that you get in a room, where you finally are allowed to take pictures and can almost touch everything (except for some ongoing art projects) and there’s one artist painting some little figurines, who you can chat with if you want. Of course they also have some stuff on display you could buy in the shop later ;). After that you get to meet lovely Kim Beaton who invites you to do some tinfoil art. She brings some energy into the whole thing and you can read about some employees on posters on the wall. After that you have one more room when you can take pictures with some props (which you can purchase later) and play with some machinery on the wall. After that the tour is done and you can stroll some more through the shop, which you can also do without purchasing tickets for the tour. The guides were really nice and friendly and tried to answer all the questions. All in all I was a bit disappointed, becaude you pay a lot of money just to look at different movie props (which are quite cool, no doubt) without having a central theme and you’re not allowed to touch them or have a closer look at things that are mounted on the wall above your head. Maybe you have to be a total movie nerd to enjoy it more. For me it would’ve been enough to stroll through the shop and enjoy the sculptures outside.

If you’re a fan of The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, this is an absolute must-visit in Wellington! The place has an impressive collection of movie memorabilia that brings Middle-earth to life. They also offer a ticketed tour of the WΔ“tā Workshop, where you can see firsthand how the props, costumes, and effects were created. It’s a fantastic experience for movie lovers and a great addition to your Wellington itinerary. Highly recommend visiting β€” you’ll leave with a whole new appreciation for the craftsmanship behind these iconic films!

The Weta Cave Tour in Wellington is awesome. You get a cool behind-the-scenes look at how props, costumes and effects for movies like Lord of the Rings or Avatar are made. The guides are super nice and tell lots of fun stories from the film world. You can even see real movie props up close. The shop has some great collectibles and souvenirs. Totally worth it, especially if you love movies!

What an awesome tour! The guide was informative and all the props and look behind the scenes of many movies and how the magic comes to life. The kids really enjoyed the foil workshop and for me the insane hours these guys work on the simplest details like implanting hair. Simply amazing and definitely recommend for anyone that loves movies.

Awesome tour!! Lots of LOTR items for fans. If you don't want to spend the money for the tour, definitely still go and check out the Cave and gift shop (lots to see & free!). If you're debating going to this one or Weta Unleashed in Auckland, I would do this one but they're both very different. The one in Auckland doesn't have anything from LOTR in the tour.

Must visit for fans. They have a lot of stuff like merchandise, art books, action figures, and property replicas (which some you can buy). Booking for a tour guide is recommended if you want to visit the Studio as well.

Weta Cave, wow blew me out of the water. The detail that goes into creating each of the props were mesmerising. I was awestruck, from Avatar, Lord of the Rings and so many others. There were a tour available but couldnt take it this time around, I believe they take you through the whole studio in detail. Will join it next time I am in Wellington. I could have wandered for longer but we were on a quick stop on our way into town. Loved the Trolls by entrance leading to the front doors, make sure to pose for some photos with them. Gladly recommend Weta Cave to everybody.

The trip was absolutely amazing. If you are into movie making techniques or behind the scenes type stuff this is definitely a must! The tour guide, I can't remember his name, was really helpful in making sure the tour was a memorable experience. You can't take any photos inside the tour but I didn't need to in order to cherish the experience. The attached photo is of one of the statues inside the shop/lobby. 10/10 a must do for a wellington trip!
