  1. The Nomadic Ghost of Invercargill ★★☆☆☆

As you all can see from the photos, the hotel is well-designed and the interior is very posh. You get a decent surprise upon seeing the lobby and the room. But we’ve had better service and hospitality at many backpackers than the Ebb. Yes I’ve stayed at other fancy hotels too. In fact, we spent two nights at the Distinction in Dunedin just before this, everyone working there made us feel right at home. I booked the Ebb almost a month ahead, thinking we might as well check out this beautiful hotel while we’re here. Yes, despite the trouble of going from one to another. Upon arrival, I asked if this is the place to check-in, not that I expected to be checked in, because we were early. The place just didn’t have the standard front desk of a hotel and there was only one girl working near a round dinning desk, and that’s why I asked. She replied “Yeah, you’re WAYYY TOO early for check-in”, that’s when I started to feel like we weren’t welcomed. So we stored our luggages there and wandered on. We came back at the arranged check-in time, the front desk girl acted like it’s the first time she saw us, not even mentioning the luggages we had stored with her until I brought it up. We were sent to the second floor. “okay, might just be a coincident, maybe it’s the first one that is ready” I thought. My wife and I are both visible minority, I later found out that many people of the same ethnicity were on the same floor with us too. It could also just be an unfortunate coincident for sure! We went on about our day, had a beautiful time at the st clair beach. When we came back to the hotel, as we walked to the elevator, a different girl was working at “the reception”, I looked at her thinking I’d give a common courtesy of a nod. In response she gave me a 180-degree security camera auto-focus scan, all the way until we are out of her sight. It made me so uncomfortable, I took out the room key to signal that we’re actually staying here. I hope I didn’t interrupt your doom-scrolling. In summary, in my most eloquent and honest words, Ebb is a deliberately crafted place, located across the car park and garbage collections of the Meridian Mall, probably the biggest one in Dunedin. The interior is designer-esque and hides itself quite well, we just didn’t have the mood to enjoy it. I want to say that this is not the typical New Zealand experience, also not the typical Dunedin experience. For most part, New Zealanders are welcoming and respectful, mindful and considerate, generous and helpful. But maybe, maybe you’ll have a different experience at the Ebb, if you are not like us. Maybe, you’ll even get their tote bag for $30, to tell the world you were here. I won’t.

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay at EBB Dunedin. We loved the unique design of the building and the beautifully styled interiors — the room was thoughtfully furnished and very comfortable. The overall atmosphere is modern yet warm, and everything felt high quality and well considered. The service was welcoming and professional, making the stay even more pleasant. We had a very comfortable experience and would happily recommend EBB Dunedin.

This hotel in Dunedin is centrally located, just one block away from the main shopping street. The room they gave me was generously sized and had everything I needed for my two-day stay. Coffee and tea was offered complimentary and I was particularly impressed that even filter coffee could be prepared! The shower was spacious and the bed comfortable enough to get a good rest. The hotel’s own restaurant seems to be popular, but I didn’t visit it. All in all I had a pleasant stay.

It’s a nicely designed hotel lacking the service elements. Asked front desk about public transportation. She answered instinctively and gave me a wrong answer. She’s slow to respond and talking to her is like pulling teeth out of her. She’s polite though. However, there’s a manager in back room and she’s much better in service and knowledgeable. But she’s not there all the time and you need to ask the receptionist to get her out if you have specific needs. First time I had to pay surcharge for credit card. Amenities are not refilled. Unused towels are not picked up suggesting to reuse (bc fresh towels are provided) Dirty towel used to clean a spill of coffee was not removed. Logo canvas bag in the room is not complementary. It was good that there was a sign for the price. It’s got the hardware but need to work on the software if you want return customers. P.S. I now agree the other review about needing a desk in the room.

High end, unique hotel. Very thoughtful touches in the room. Cafe was also excellent. Only downside was a view of the parking lot from the room, but the window tinting helped and they had designed the room so well that we just ignored the cars ;)

One of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. Everything screams class. Even the reception area was very unique and high classed. The Central Area was an open concept which allowed the natural ventilation in. Rooms were neat and all amenities provided. Highly recommended.

A good boutique hotel in the centre of Dunedin. Room is spacious, new , and modern. Bin wasn’t cleaned for us, but staff rectified it immediately when we asked. Recommended if you’re visiting Dunedin and would like somewhere central to stay.

Really a wonderful place to stay. Ended up here by chance after a nearby hotel (Fable) messed up our booking and had to get us a room here as they had no more. Stylishly designed with an efficient and aesthetically pleasing use of space, it earns its right to have 5 stars. The reception is oddly dressed down/deconstructed, very informal without being unprofessional or inappropriate for the setting. The decor is lovely. Rooms are very spacious. Coffee in particular is roasted locally and ground on site, offered in room with pour over facilities - amazing! The attached cafe is also absolutely awesome, and reasonably priced for the quality of food and drink you get. Highly recommend.
