The hotel is centrally located and has a laundry room and parking (extra fee). The rooms are clean but have seen better days and need an urgent update. Nice and welcoming staff.

My wife an I only stayed one night, just a brief visit to Dunedin. The hotel is nicely located close to the Octagon and Mall. If I had to identify one are to improve, it would be that some parts of the room were tired, but that is not a major to us. The service and interaction with every staff member was great, all helpful, all upbeat, which is much more important. Beds were great, had a good night sleep. Will definitely stay again, hopefully a bit longer next time.

The hotel is well placed with only a short walk to the Octagon and shopping areas. Our room was spacious and well appointed although the bathroom looked tired and dated. The room appeared clean and tidy, however there were a few hairs on the basin and soap scum around the edge of the shower. Our room was serviced after our first day but the standard was very poor. The fresh towels had just been tossed up onto a shelf (not even tidily or placed on the rails). It would seem an attempt had been made to wash our crockery in the bathroom sink but some were just left unwashed on the vanity. There were also coffee splashes around the basin. The toilet and shower appeared not to have been cleaned and the soap scum was still around the shower. The bed was pulled up somewhat neatly but the pillows just tossed on top. I found this service extremely poor and very disappointing. It’s not too much to expect to return to your room and find it clean and tidy. We were in a group of nearly 20 people and when we arrived at 4pm only some of our rooms were ready for our arrival. (Check in time was 2pm) We then found out that none of these door keys were programmed to our actual rooms therefore we couldn’t get in without assistance and hence needed to return to reception to get this remedied. The ones whose rooms weren’t ready said they would wait in the bar and were told staff would come to inform them when the rooms were ready. After waiting over an hour one of our friends went to reception to querie this and found that yes the rooms were in fact ready, but no, they hadn’t bothered to pass this on. Reception staff were very friendly and the buffet breakfast had a very substantial selection and was of a high standard. So, as much as the location was great and the food was very good, I definitely would not return to this hotel.

I stayed here for 13 nights in a Superior King Room on the 4th floor. Overall, it was a very comfortable and pleasant stay. The location is excellent β€” right in the heart of the city and just a short walk from The Octagon. Many major attractions, restaurants, pubs, banks, and a Woolworths are nearby. There are also around five Indian restaurants within walking distance, so it’s easy to find Indian lunch or dinner options. The room was spacious, quiet, and carpeted, with a king-size bed, two chairs, a table, and a bathroom with a bathtub. There was also a small kitchen area with a kettle, refrigerator, a few cutlery items, and complimentary tea, coffee, cookies, and milk provided daily. The bed was comfortable, and there was plenty of wardrobe space. Each room had an iron, ironing board, hair dryer, alarm clock, and a TV with around 22 channels (no Netflix or Amazon Prime). A heating pump and a separate fan were also available, which was very convenient. The room was cleaned daily, and towels were changed on alternate days. Breakfast was tasty and started at 6:30 am on weekdays and 7:00 am on weekends. I am vegetarian and found a few good vegetarian options. The breakfast spread included juices, breads, tea, coffee, hash browns, noodles, milk, curd, cornflakes, pancakes, muffins, croissants, and many more items. Breakfast was included in my booking; otherwise, it costs around $30 per person. I didn’t opt for lunch or dinner, but room service is available if needed. β€’ Wi-Fi is free in all rooms and has good speed. β€’ Laundry facilities are available; it costs $5 per cloth for washing and drying. β€’ Elevator is available and works smoothly. β€’ Car parking is available at $25 per night, but you can also find free parking nearby. β€’ Check-in and check-out were smooth, quick, and hassle-free. The staff were very friendly, helpful, and available 24/7. They were always ready to assist with any request. A wonderful stay overall β€” perfect location, comfortable rooms, tasty breakfast, and great service. Highly recommended for families and anyone visiting Dunedin for a short or long stay.

Reception team were lovely! We accidentally set off the fire alarm in out room when using our curlers and they were so quick to act and friendly about the whole situation. Very professional, we were expecting a telling off but the Duty Manager was so understanding. The 2 ladies that checked us in and out were bubbly and helpful, and the room was spacious with the most comfortable bed I think we've ever had in a hotel. 10/10 highly recommend!

Beautiful Iconic motel. The service was 5star, nothing too much trouble and polite wonderful staff. Wonderful food from restaurant and room service prompt and lovely. The room itself had some minor maintenance required and the water pressure was poor. All else was amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and central location to explore Dunedin. Definitely go have a meal at the casino, the architecture alone makes it worth a look. Beautiful old buildings.

Lovely room, quiet if you get a room at the rear or up high. Customer service is excellent with very friendly staff. Only criticism is of the front of house staff in the restaurant who was never at the front counter, did not clear tables and was more interested in getting your room number and a signature on the docket than actually interacting or providing any service.

Scenic Hotel Southern Cross is a 5/5 for me. Attending a conference, we found the check-in process quick and easy. Tips for users of the lift - scan your card on the 'floor lock' which on one of the lifts, is located on the side wall. Took us a while to figure out why we weren't moving! Rooms are 'very' roomy and not your typical hotel bedroom. I had a Super King bed which was 'super' comfortable. Loved the small 'magnified mirror' in the bathroom - all Hotels need these! One small point, the showers are over the bath (I asked other guests from our conference and they were all similar). If you have difficulty stepping in and out of a bath, beware of this. Location was an easy stroll to the Octagen or the many other restaurants nearby. There was some street noise, but it was a Friday and Saturday night, so really out of their control. Breakfast was a full buffet and offered great choice with nothing looking like it had sat there 'forever'. One coffee urn possibly needs to be rectified as the queue got a little tiresome. The toast machine may need a going over - I had to send my toast through 3 times and it 'just' made toast status. Staff were really friendly and it was an enjoyable stay. Congratulations

Stayed three nights, not the first stay, so knew what to expect. It’s a convenient, clean and quiet hotel with many on-site dining options. The Ports o’ Call bar and grill is very handy for a meal or a before and / or after dinner drink.

It was fine. Clean and tidy. Wifi was good. Staff were good. Just a few small things that could be improved, for some reason the room I was in had 1 ceiling light in the main room area, so it was a bit dark, the window let some noise in I think because a latch had been broken off. Not a fan of the bathroom facilities, shared pump bottles and the cheapest toilet paper.
