The Thirsty Whale Bar & Restaurant delivers a classic fish-and-chips offering that’s straight to the point. Value feels fair for the spread. Blue cod and other fillets arrive fresh with light batter. Front‑of‑house runs with calm, helpful energy. Meals land promptly at the pass.
Food was amazing. Service not great. Waited over 20mins for drinks when the venue wasn’t busy and we ended up canceling our drinks as the staff were too busy chatting to each other. Everything else phenomenal!
Food was amazing. Some had seafood pasta at the table and they would get something else next time. 100% recommend chicken schnitzel with mushroom sauce and fries. Sheree is attentive and an excellent host
This is one of my favourite spots to come to when I visit Napier. The food is always good, my favourite is the crispy chicken salad, Yum Yum. We’ve had breakfast, lunch and dinner here on numerous occasion. The owners and staff are absolutely lovely. We always have a good time here. If you have a big group of people you can book the upstairs room. The whole place has amazing views onto the pier. We booked the upstairs room for some family and friends the day after we got married. We had a lovely lunch and we were very well looked after. Thanks team
Friendly staff. Usual menu for this type of Restaurant: Lots of deep fried stuff, burgers, pizzas, etc. Fairly bland food with little presentation imagination. Meals of normal size for the money but lacking flair or originality. Large space and can be very busy. Best to book if you plan to dine at a peak time. Bright and airy surroundings. Reasonable selection of drinks. A popular venue.
Great variety of options on the menu. A collection of sea faring maps and memorabilia on the walls. Good selection of wines to accompany your tastes. We had the seafood extravaganza and the slow braised lamb shank. Both meals were delicious and a bit more than we could get thru. Great value and spot on service.
Great impromptu dinner. Service was outstanding, the food was great and it was a great atmosphere, being quite busy.
We had dinner. The menu is pretty standard along with the quality of the food which was above average. The service was a mixed bag, good and nasty. The positive thing about this place is the affordable price. I had 2 mains and a desert with 2 craft beers for $99. I may come back..
Staff were very friendly and helpful. One of our party wanted an item from their lunch menu which had just finished but they were willing to do this for him. Wonderful atmosphere and reasonably priced.
DELICIOUS! We ate here for dinner and it was lovely. The bar is awesome all lit up and the fireplace was great on a cooler night. The meal was great and the cocktails were super yum! We would definitely come back. Thanks so much!
Excellent tasting food, friendly staff, nice atmosphere, will definitely go back again for dinner. Highly recommended. Visited here with my wife and daughter, we all had something different for Dinner. I had oxtail stew, it was cooked to perfection, and tasted amazing. My wife had fish of the day, which she said was delicious. My daughter had roast pork, she loved it. I visit Napier a few times a year, we will definitely be returning to The Thirsty Whale. It had an awesome menu, and the food is delicious.
