Decent pub grub, pricing is comparable to other similar eateries, good vibes and busy because of a popular looking quiz night. My fish and chip meal was very good.
The place is spacious with plenty of room, and parking is super easy. I also love that it stays open late. I happened to try their Thursday special — a $35 ribeye steak — and it was amazing. The steak was huge, cooked medium just as I ordered. The outside had a nice char, but the inside was tender and flavorful. I asked for the chips to be crispy, and they came out perfectly crunchy and delicious. I definitely want to go back and have it again!
An absolute must-visit! The food is simply superb, with standout dishes like the lamb shank, tender and full of rich flavor, the perfectly crisp squid, and the irresistibly crispy pork bites. Every bite is a delight!
Nice ambience. Game night so there were quite a number of people there to watch the match. We ordered our drinks but they took a long time to come and no one came to take our order for the food. When the waitress realized she was very apologetic, quickly got us our drinks and took our food order. The garlic bread was served quickly. Our mains came in good time. Taste wise the garlic bread and chowder are good. Find the pork ribs average and will not order that again in future.
Service is the worst we have ever experienced. If we weren’t meeting people there for a meal we would have walked out. Didn’t feel welcome right from the beginning by one of the bar staff. Don’t think she knew how to smile or how to greet the customers. Felt we were more of a nuisance for her. Won’t be going back there!
We were a large group. I called a few days earlier and was told because they already had 2 large groups they couldn't accommodate us. They suggested the bar area. We arrived, had a corner of reserved tables and can't rave enough about our experience. We would do this again in preference to eating in the restaurant. Well done Avonhead Tavern, you went above and beyond. Highly recommend
Food cold! We were confronted by "manager" to stress that our waitress was new...felt like we were being told off for complaining about our cold meals. One guest requested it be taken back and heated, problem was by the time she got to eat we were finished our meals. Very disappointing and an unpleasant experience. Surprised that staff don't have name badges etc, especially the manager on shift perhaps this is something that needs considering especially if patrons are chastised for not seeking 'the Manager" Won't be back for both cold food and very poor service!
Great experience until our meals came out. No service check in throughout the meal. Asked for medium steak and got blue steak. Large tables around us made it hard to enjoy dining experience.
Loved this pub. Generous food, good service and golf. Only pub in NZ that has 4 golf simulators. Pinballs too. Feels very friendly.
