Extremely disappointed after over 10 years with Southern Cross. I was assured by their staff over the phone in April 2025 that my UltraCare policy could be placed on hold while I moved overseas — only to later be told the suspension was never approved, without any follow-up or phone call. Based on the staff’s verbal confirmation, I made financial plans assuming the policy was on suspension. Southern Cross then demanded I pay over $5,700 in “arrears” for a period I believed was on hold. Their reasoning? Two small GP claims submitted automatically by our clinic — totalling just $94. I was never told these claims would invalidate the suspension, and we didn’t submit them ourselves. Southern Cross now refuses to take responsibility for giving me misleading information, even though they’ve admitted communication “could have been clearer” and that their staff mishandled parts of the case. After 10+ years of loyalty on their highest plan, I expected better. This experience has been incredibly stressful and financially damaging. I’ve had to escalate the matter to the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman to get fair treatment. I can no longer trust Southern Cross to stand behind their own words or take care of their members.

When I walked—or rather, limped—into Southern Cross Brightside Hospital for my partial knee replacement a week ago, I was prepared for pain, hospital-grade mystery meat, and the general dreary ambience one expects from a medical facility. What I got instead was a five-star, luxury wellness retreat that happened to surgically install a brand new joint in my leg. Team Brightside, you absolute legends, take a bow! The Surgical Dream Team My original knee joint had been staging a protest for years. It was grumpy, stiff, and clearly had no interest in following me up stairs. Enter the surgeons: a team so skilled, I’m convinced they could perform surgery while simultaneously solving a Rubik’s Cube and mixing a perfect espresso. They weren't just professionals; they were precision artists. With the help of the robot, Dr Jacob Munro and the team made the whole process less like a medical procedure and more like commissioning a bespoke piece of bionic engineering. The results? Still only 5 days post surgery, but I am thrilled with progress to date. Now, let's talk about the nurses. These are not just people; they are ninjas of empathy armed with kindness and an uncanny ability to find a vein on the first try. From the cheerful daytime crew ensuring my pain management was smoother than a jazz saxophone solo, to the evening shift providing philosophical insights and perfectly fluffed pillows, the care was simply amazing. But the true star of the late-night show, the hero of the twilight hours, was Clare from the UK. Clare, with a dry wit sharper than any scalpel and a voice that clearly indicates she’s not messing around, was my night nurse. When I was convinced, at 3:00 AM, that my leg was inventing new and spectacular forms of throbbing, Clare arrived. She didn't just administer medication; she delivered a short, sharp dose of quintessential British no-nonsense charm. " Let's settle down and get you some sleep." She handled every beep, request, and anxiety wobble with the perfect blend of competence and hilarious deadpan delivery. Clare, if you ever leave nursing, please consider becoming a stand-up comedian specializing in orthopaedic recovery—you kept the pain away with sheer English grit and a truly kind heart. The Culinary Experience: Forget Hospital Food, Hello Michelin Star Seriously, who is running the kitchen at Brightside? Because they deserve a raise, a medal, and perhaps a small crown. The term "hospital food" should be legally banned when discussing the Brightside menu. This was culinary first class. I’ve had meals at expensive Auckland establishments that weren't half as good as the lamb I devoured post-op. The morning and afternoon teas tasted like sunshine and hope. The desserts were a small, decadent reward for simply existing. I genuinely started looking forward to meal times more than my physio sessions. My only complaint is that I couldn't stay another week just to try the rest of the menu. I’m pretty sure I went in for a knee replacement and came out a food critic. Final Verdict Southern Cross Brightside Hospital isn't a hospital; it's a healing sanctuary. From the moment you arrive until yousay goodbye (yes, I almost cried leaving Clare and the lamb shank), the entire team—surgeons, anaesthetists, physiotherapists, and the culinary wizards—are devoted to making your experience not just manageable, but genuinely delightful. If you need a partial knee replacement, or frankly, if you just need a really good meal and a kind word, this is the only place in Auckland to go. Thank you, Team Brightside, for fixing my knee and renewing my faith in both healthcare and institutional catering!

Truly Exceptional Care and Results at Brightside Hospital! I recently had a total hip replacement at Brightside Hospital in Auckland, and I couldn't be happier with the entire experience. From the moment I arrived, the staff were friendly, genuinely caring, and absolutely amazing. I was incredibly lucky to have the procedure done by the brilliant team of Dr. Michael Flint and Dr. Matt McGill. They are absolutely top-notch professionals, and the results are astounding—I was up and walking around just three hours after the surgery! The exceptional care continued throughout my recovery. A huge thank you to the recovery nurses, Brook and Andrea, and the physio, Liza, who were all terrific and provided such encouraging support. On top of the incredible medical treatment, the food was excellent, which made the stay even better! I highly, highly recommend Brightside Hospital and their wonderful team. Thank you for a truly positive and successful outcome.

6 days ago I checked in at 7.30am on a Wednesday morning and my hip replacement journey started. This was my 14th surgery since a fateful, wet night on Swanson Road in 1981, so I have a lot to compare it to. I've been in 9 different hospitals over those years, 3 being public hospitals and the other 6 being private hospitals. Brightside is exceptional. For a start, it's small. That means you don't get forgotten. The staffing levels are great and they really get the time to spend with you by your bedside. The staff are lovely. The bestest! It's a sign of how great the workplace culture is at Brightside, that so many staff have been there a long time. Some staff members up to 30 years. Many I spoke to, at least 7 years. The hospital has been there in Epsom for many years, but has had a complete renovation with 4 state-of-the-art operating theatres. No wonder my surgeon wants to use their facilities. The food. OMG, the food! It was the best I've had in a private hospital. Yum. Thank you to Brightside for a great experience. You rock. See you soon for my 15th surgery.

I was lucky enough to finally have my surgery for endometriosis at Brightside Hospital. The staff are amazing, made me feel welcome, calm as I was nervous and always prepared to help and just really nice. I am so grateful to the surgeon for doing what he did and thankful to the nurses and other staff for being so supportive. Thank you.

If I could add more stars I would. I had surgery two weeks ago and this has to be the best hospital I have ever been to. I have never had a surgery before and was very nervous but the nurses where so compassionate and lovely that all my worries went away. Once out of surgery the nurses had so much time for me. When I felt sick I would press the call button and they were in my room in what felt like two seconds. They helped me to the toilet when needed and just all around were there to help. If I ever need to have surgery again I would 1000000% chose Brightside. Thank you all for the best experience! P.S The food was amazing and there is free parking.

3 night stay at Brightside DAA hip replacement. All staff are extremely professional, caring, polite, helpful and go out of their way to take care of your recovery. I've been in many private surgical hospitals: Ascot, Mercy, Braemar, SX Gillies, SX Hamilton and SX Rotorua. Brightside Hospital tops the list. All staff at Brightside should be very proud of what you all. A big thankyou. Paul

Our son just had a major back operation at this hospital. The surgeons, nurses and other staff along with the after care could not have been better. A special thanks to Simon, Mark, and the theater staff who were involved in the operation and to the many nurses and staff who contributed to his speedy recovery. Fantastic effort by all and could not recommend more highly.

Best hospital experience I have ever had! Every staff member from the woman who greeted me at reception and every nurse male and female were extremely kind and helpful. I did an overnight stay after an ankle operation and was a bit wary of staying overnight in a hospital. However, it was a decision I would not hesitate to make again at Brightside - amazing service and care.
