    We had a group of 10 of us and decided to book the ‘Gannet Safari and Wine Tour Combo’. This turned out to be a real gem, giving us a wonderful full day’s variety of experiences without having to drive. Don our friendly, humorous and very knowledgeable guide who put this tour together collected us all from our accommodation in a very new looking van at 8.30am and returned us at 6.00pm. We had a very comfortable trip out to the main colony at the Cape, with time to take some great photographs overlooking the cliffs. We had plenty of time at the colony with a very pleasant morning tea (coffee) served from the back of the van. This trip was earlier in the season (October) so some of the gannets were still trying to sort out nesting sites and partners and others were sitting on eggs. After the gannet tour and a short drive we arrived at the renowned Clearview Estate Winery for lunch and a private wine tasting at our table. Each of the (6) wines tasted, including some of their top reserve wines were matched perfectly with dishes from the well-appointed gourmet platter. Don then took us on a wider Hawke’s Bay wine discovery tour visiting some of the most outstanding wineries in the district, including the famous Craggy Range Winery where we had a further private tasting and then headed on to Te Mata Estate. Don’s 40 years of winemaking in the Bay meant we gathered a great “behind the scenes” perspective and it was very special to have a share of his deep inside knowledge and experience.
