Nestled on New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty coast, Mount Maunganui offers a perfect blend of golden-sandy beaches, lively seaside cafΓ©s, and a dramatic volcanic summit. The ascent of Mauao rewards with panoramic ocean and harbour views, while the main beach invites surf or sun-soaked relaxation. Busy in high Summer but still charming year-round, the village vibe and natural beauty make it a memorable getaway.

The climb was good. Easy hike even my 4 year old daughter manage to reach the summit without telling me to carry her. The summit was the disappointing part since theres too much trees there and they kinda blocked the beautiful view. A little bit of trimming would make a huge difference. Would go there again. Recommended.

We come here twice a year, love it! Climbing the Mount is an absolute must, I try and get up there 3/4 times during our visit, the views are incredible!

Great walk with different ways to the summit. View is gorgeous. 30~ mins to the top with the quickest (steepest path). I started at 7:30am on a Tuesday.

Amazing view! The walk is a bit steep, and there are a few cliff edges to be mindful of if you're going with young kidsβ€”but we did it with our 5-year-old daughter, and she loved it. All in all, a fantastic experience!

One of our fave places to visit. Parking a bit tough because its so busy but we usually get parked. A walk around or up the mount is a must. Amazing views from the top and equally great sea views when walking around. Great cafe's and eatery's, plus good shopping.

Absolute beauty, every visit. Make sure you don't start with a muscle ache and have at least some stamina if you want to walk to the top. Don't be put off by the really fit folks that will pass you, while running, at least 3 times.

Almost gave it a 4-star as the main trail was very steep with mediocre views. But the view at the top is worth it. On my descent I took the back route which was longer but a more gradual incline and beautiful views - the better option in my option. It’s around 20-30 mins to walk the fastest (steepest) trail, 30-40 using the back trail. You can also walk the circumference which is longer again and almost completely flat

Brilliant views, quite a steep climb and a pretty busy track. It took about 2 hours up and down with my 6 year old grand daughter. Not too hot yesterday which made it pleasant. Council are finishing an attractive star dial on the summit.

I'd recommend taking the Pilot Bay side for the ascent and main beach side for descent. You'd see locals/regulars completing it like it's nothing and then visitors like me making a lot of effort to reach the summit. Taking breaks means you can absorb changing landscapes in all their glory. A picture speaks a thousand words, totally worth the effort. Be cautious on descent, gravel can be slippery.
