Taking a train through the mountains is often an interesting experience. Although the scenery may not be as stunning in summer, it offers a truly authentic and local experience. In the open air carriages, you can get closer to the scenery, but the wind can be very strong.

A fantastic and unique experience. A journey through completely different landscapes. Hills with cows, sheep, and horses, cliffs, the ocean with seals and birds. It almost feels like a step away from our current reality. The service was excellent. The staff was very friendly. We chose the meal option. We ate throughout the trip, distributing the various courses over time. We wanted to taste New Zealand wines, and we were able to satisfy our curiosity. Each dish was paired with the right wine. Congratulations to everyone. An experience worth trying.

Great trip on the coastal pacific, don't forget to bring snacks though, the cafe car is good but not great , it can get very busy too. The scenery is great, a must do for train enthusiasts or anyone wanting a relaxing way to see the island and coast.

Amazing service offered by everyone right from the ticket counter. It is always recommended to reserve your tickets online as there are limited seats. The topography changes quickly & beautifully in a way we feel some movie is on the screen. The coach was nice and comfortable with very clean & fresh interiors. The seats were spacious and comfortable with a table placed between every set of four seats. During our journey there was some work undergoing at the Arthur pass tunnel. So we had to get down & board a bus and travel on a bus for 15 minutes then get onto the train after the tunnel. It was arranged perfectly well without any kind of confusion. We missed the train journey through the tunnel.

I travelled from Christchurch to Arthurs Pass, overnighted 2 nights at Alpine Motel and returned on the same train. Buffet car serves hot and cold food, tea, coffee, mulled wine and other alcohol. Staff all fantastic and helpful. Not much of interest to see close up on leaving Christchurch but it gets more interesting the closer the train gets to the mountains and there is a good audio commentary available over free headphones. Some great walks of varying length and difficulty once you get to Arthurs Pass, only one place open for meals as Arthurs itself is closed and up for sale and Keas Cafe (also for sale) didnt open over the 2 days I was there and locals said it opens irregularly. You could come back on the same day as the train arrives Arthurs Pass around 10:40 , continues to Greymouth then returns to Arthurs Pass at 4:30 pm for a 7pm arrival back to Christchurch.

We took the scenic plus from Christchurch to Moana and back. The views both ways were gorgeous. At Moana, we went for a couple of short walks that were very beautiful. On the return journey we werenβt very happy with the food. It was not flavourful, and the staff claimed to run out of certain items. But the views and scenery were as enjoyable as ever. I think we paid over $2,000 for three tickets both ways and food should have been good both ways. The staff were very polite and friendly.

We travelled on the TranzAlpine from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass with a small tour group to travel on a minivan by road back to Christchurch. The train travel was thru scenic Canterbury Plains to the climb up the Southern Alps. The seating was comfortable and the dining car was functional to have a coffee and a tasty savoury scone.

I travelled to Arthur's Pass on this train and loved it. Check in was easy, my seat comfortable, there is scenery both sides to experience so it is not necessary to sit on right side. The cafe has a variety of options and coffee nice. Service and commentary excellent. I highly recommend this rail journey in New Zealand.

This was a great experience, we boarded at Greymouth stopping off for a day at Arthur's Pass to do some hiking.we then continued the next day to Christchurch. We enjoyed stunning scenery on the way and the train staff were very helpful. Great views all round and if you want to take some photos then head to the observation carriage. Nice comfortable and spacious seats and large windows in all carriages for great views.
