The management Mr huriawa is creepy he acts all nice but he stalked my daughter the whole time she was there she said she even caught him taken photos of her. I will be taking this evidence all to the police and suing him and the owner unless the manager is fired immediately.
Fair to say this hostel is a little confronting when you 1st approach it. But the private room my brother and I got suited our needs perfectly. The complementary tea, coffee and milk are a welcome extra. Yes there were a few permanents staying there, but certainly no issue to us as guests. The cats that live at the property were not seen in the accommodation area of the hostel while we were there. Bus 5 to and from the city runs every 30 minutes and the bus stops just a short stroll away. We only met the female host, she was easy to talk to and very accommodating. I spoke to Mike on the phone and he was also helpful Give it a shot, but keep an open mind.

We had a private room and the room itself was quite nice. The owners are very nice, but they forgot to tell us that they only take cash and they require a bond of 20$ The communal areas are dirty, and some areas smell like cat pee. There are also two people who live there full time (not the owners) that are a bit creepy to be around.
I really love the owners. Very friendly and helpful people. I was a long-termer and there was a reason for that. Always nice and interesting travelers around and the new cat is so lovely! The facilities are always clean, it's a nice garden (including campground) and the TV-Lounge is a comfy place to hang around. I think it's still the cheapest place in town and right now they're renovating the other building for more space. You should check it out!
I came back, because there have been always great people around. Good atmosphere. The cheapest place in Christchurch as far as I know. Camping in the garden possible, if you want to save some money. Kind owners. It's an ordinary hostel, but the facilities are alright. No WiFi available
We are in winter. Heating system not working in room #4. Had to sleep street clothes on. The kitchen is good. Boys shower not working. Garden needs clearance. Reception was cold. Eastgate shopping center is near.
Maybe it's not the tidiest place in NZL but the price is the best in all of christchurch. Every point this hostel loses because of it being a bit messy or the too small kitchen /bath is made up twice by the owners. They might be the most helpful and likeable people running these kind of business I met so far in NZL. They are dedicated to this small hostel. Just in the middle of expanding/ renovating it all by themselves. They'll always try to help you if you can't find any place to sleep around town or maybe if you got problems with your car. Definitely a recommendation! Thanks for everything Mike!
Had exactly what I was looking for at the last minute for a very reasonable price. Owners were extremely helpful and polite, location was quite decent (not far at all from citycenter). Free pick up from town was fantastically conveniant as well. I actually failed to arrange accomodation in Christchurch beforehand but called up Avon City Backpackers from the airport when I arrived. Despite the short notice, they had a vacancy available and quickly organized a room and pick up and everything. Overall an excellent budget hostel that completely saved my bacon, would recommend.
