We really enjoyed dinner at Midnight Shanghai. A great way to finish our holiday at Christchurch. We ordered the Edamame, BBQ buns, crystal prawn dim sum, duck and hoisin dumplings, vegan dumplings, and Chinese roast pork belly—everything was excellent. Our top picks were the vegan dumplings and the roast pork belly. The vegan dumplings were perfectly done: a thin, translucent wrapper with a crunchy edamame-and-mushroom filling. The roast pork belly was outstanding too, with a thick, crispy layer of fat that still wasn’t tough to bite through. $160 for our family of 3 adults - great value for money. If you’re around the Riverside Market area, this is a fantastic spot for Chinese food.

A great spot for modern Chinese food with a fun twist. The dishes are well executed, flavorful, and thoughtfully presented—classic flavors done in a clean, contemporary way. Everything we tried was solid and nicely balanced. The KTV rooms are a real highlight: private, great sound system, wide range of songs to choose from - perfect way to have a bloody good time with your friends by singing and dancing the night away. Service was friendly and efficient, and the overall vibe works well for a casual night out or a small celebration. A good choice if you’re looking for quality food paired with a fun KTV experience.

Cocktails were good and the food was even better. Was taken back to China Town in Manchester... fantastic flavours, great value and awesome quick service. Lost a star for atmosphere only because it was a quiet Saturday afternoon, that didn't matter as we were there for the food and it slapped!

It was my friend and I’s first day in New Zealand ever, i saw this restaurant online and said we’re going here and it did not disappoint. We had a lovely server whom I asked what he’d recommend for the flat rice noodles and he said beef (I don’t usually eat beef) trusted him and OH MA GAWD was soooo good. My friend had the shanghai fried noodles and the beef cheek spring roll, again, 10/10. We were sat front of house opposite the kitchen which was fine but would’ve loved to been in the atmosphere more for such an amazing meal. Who cares when the foods that great. Thank you!!

My wife and I are visiting New Zealand from the States on our honeymoon and chose this place for dinner following recommendations we found on Reddit. We ordered the “Trust the Chef” prix fixe option with some mocktails and were absolutely floored by how good it was. We ended up with eight courses: prawn toast, pork wonton, mouthwatering chicken, a xiaolongbao and shumai each, crispy roasted duck in curry, stir fried oyster mushrooms, green beans in XO sauce and tiramisu for dessert. Every course was absolutely delicious, and I particularly loved the prawn toast and the roast duck. The portion sizes were also massive- we ended up with two takeaway boxes and could probably have saved more if we paced ourselves properly. Midnight Shanghai showed us a spectacular meal and I hope to visit them again someday!

Great atmosphere and service, cocktails here are top notched indeed. We didn’t really enjoy the oxtail spring roll as the meat taste quite gamey, and overall it’s a bit overpriced. But the black tiger shrimp was so good! Def fulfilled our Asian stomach still.

The food, though very good was very expensive. More a family style service, a plate with 12-14 small pieces of chicken will set you back almost 30 bucks. The twice cooked pork was very, very good and just the right bang to it. Our server was very, very good. Quick, very attentive, and got our subsequent orders out quickly. We were placed outside and it started to rain. The cover over the outside terrace was leaking badly. The water began to affect the lanterns outside as they started to flick on and off. Would suggest that management sort out the exterior dining for customers comfort and safety.

My partner and I booked a table at Midnight Shanghai for a childless date! The whole night was perfect. The cocktails were delicious and the food was phenomenal. The Salt Pepper Fries were the best fries we’d ever eaten! The staff were some of the friendliest we’d ever met, making us feel comfortable and relaxed! If you’re looking for a unique night out, we highly recommend Midnight Shanghai and we can’t wait to come back! From some very happy and satisfied customers!
