Great place for a scenic walk and explore the historic tunnels and learn some history. Access to a beautiful long beach, 360 degree views across Tamaki Makaurau. Native flora and fauna.

Mangauika / North Head is an extinct volcano that erupted thousands of years ago and is part of Auckland Volcanic Fields. An ancestral mountain for Maori iwis in Auckland. The New Zealand Army used this volcano as a fortification with batteries scattered throughout the mountain. Access to Mangauika is quite easy with a car park up to the slopes of the volcano. Then the hike is quite easy and not steep at all. By walking, its also easily accessible from Cheltenham Beach. Accessing the fortifications are quite easy and there are a lot of information provided regarding the history of the volcano and the fortifications of it.

Very informative history of the War Tunnels and walking through them gives you the feel of what it must have felt like for all brave people who fought to save this beautiful country. The scenery is amazing. It's well worth the visit but some areas may be difficult for people not too good on their feet.

We recently visited Maungauika / North Head Historic Reserve, and it was such a memorable experienceβespecially for the kids! The site is not only stunning with panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf, Rangitoto Island, and Aucklandβs skyline, but itβs also full of rich history. The kids loved exploring the old tunnels, bunkers, and gun emplacements, and it was a great hands-on way for them to learn about New Zealandβs coastal defence history. Thereβs plenty of open space to run around, and the walking tracks are easy to navigate with lots of interesting stops along the way. Highly recommend for families, history lovers, or anyone looking to enjoy one of Aucklandβs most unique scenic spots!

North Head or Maunguika (NZ native MΔori name) is located on a hillock with a 360-degree spectacular view including Auckland harbour, Hauraki Gulf and its islands. There are couple of walking tracks too, some of which extend to other tramping tracks in the Devonport area. It has a long history, first with MΔori occupation, before the arrival of Europeans. MΔori settled on the Devonport peninsula for its rich volcanic soils and rich marine environment. Soon after the settlement of the British, Auckland was established as the capital of the country and in 1840 North Head became the site of the first pilot station, for guiding ships into the Auckland harbour. And also the place was developed as a strategic military location base too, to attack rival forces in a possible enemy attack. It is considered the most significant coastal defense site in New Zealand which span nearly 120 years because of the size and variety of its defense installations. It has a network of accessible old bunkers and tunnels as its legacy which are open to the public to view. The site was protected as part of Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park in 1972 and listed as a Category I historic place in 2001.

Beautiful view of Rangitoto Island! No blue sky today but I can imagine it being very beautiful when itβs not overcast! The climb up here is not bad. You can drive to the parking lot and walk up the hill!

Good eye sight of whole city centre. But before we came this car is parked as the gate locked already around 8:30pm the time we arrived. But after our walk 3- 4 cars parked that is locked. which seen on board 06:00am open 10:00pm closed. This is very inconvenience and hoping some improvement in near future.
