It is one of the most delightful dinner that I have in a long time. The host (Alex) seated us right on time, and was most pleasant. The server (Emmy) was most friendly and attentive even though it was Sunday night at 6 pm. I had the Chateaubriand. It was marvellously well cooked - seared perfectly on the outside and medium rare in the center. The seasoning was very nice too. Yeah, a memorable dinner. Steve (USA).

Steak was a bit cold when served, so disappointing but the agria fries were nice and hot. Desserts were the best.

Beware!!! Go to El Matador Instead!!!! I really wanted to like this place but for me the steak and service leit down. Enter the restaurant and there is a bunch of people from the hotel just standing around all the diners. Push through to the bloke at the till/desk/reception area and he just asks can i help you in the most annoyed tone ever. Give out reservation name and put it down to annoyance due to hotel foyer people crowding diners after their conference. Birthday holiday from Australia, came here specifically for the Aged Sirloin - "sorry no dry aged steaks tonight" great. That's okay, I'll have the Chateaubriand mid rare. Get delivered the steak in the pictures. Ask about it, say there was a mix up and they put the NY cut Sirloin in. Never mind, I'm not waiting for another steak and it's a bit cheaper, FiancΓ©e says we can get dessert after with the difference! Not only did they mix up my steak but it came out medium, almost medium well (the pictures makes it look closer to medium). The red wine jus was average, I've genuinely had better at an RSL club in regional Australia. Cocktails were good, I will give you that, but the steak was such a let down that we didn't want to stay around. Time to pay right? Wrong. You wait in line to pay and then when it's your turn some boomer walks past you to the make a request that all drinks go on the room tab, but not the meals. You politely tell them that there is a line but the Maitre D' is already processing that request. Boomer looks at you and says they are just trying to sort out their drinks. Wow, what an excuse. 2 minutes later of them clarifying and me telling Boomer he should have told his server instead, it's my time to pay. I ask why he let old mate push in front and the man says that he was staying in the hotel. Really?? FiancΓ©e just wants to go at this point because my birthday meal is essentially marred by this experience. Maitre D' asks me how my meal was. "Steak I wanted wasn't available, the steak in ordered wasn't delivered and the steak in got was overcooked" Oh yes, we have been a bit busy tonight. It's Wednesday the 5th of November, I can see empty tables mate, you're not kidding me. No discount, no sorry. Guy behind me quietly taps me on the shoulder and says he had a similar experience with the Oysters (?) but to try out El Matador. I will be back to New Zealand but I will not be visiting Portlander. El Matador on the other hand WILL be receiving returning patronage.

Great dinner out for my parents 50th wedding anniversary. Everyone really enjoyed it, and the service was excellent

Great food and excellent Service. Our waitress Tori made us feel very welcome and checked in regularly to make sure we had everything we wanted. We shared the clam chowder and garlic bread to start. It was the best chowder I've had in a long time. Full of flavour. You can't tell from the photo but it's thicker than it looks. My wife had the fish of the day and I had the eye fillet. She loved the fish and my steak was perfectly cooked and so juicy. We shared the crinkle-cut fries and lettuce sides. We couldn't fault anything. We highly recommend Portlander.

The steak ws amazing. It's unfortunate that $45 only will get you the steak, doesn't come with mash as it used to be but you have to pay an additional $10 for it. The chocolate cake wasn't my favourite, maybe if it was a little heated could've been better as it was hard. Service was great a first, but then it got busy, we understood that they were taking more time. But we probably sat for 30-35 mins after we finished dinner waiting for someone to take our dessert order.

Visited Portlander today for birthday dinner. Upon arrival everything looked good, clean and all the customers chatting happily amongst themselves. We were seated in the far corner facing the road which was good. Sadly this place didn’t live up to the hype or amazing look or name it has around town. We sat for 10 minutes before ordering with Jono. However that was the last time within 50 minutes we would see Jono again. Not him or any other staff would approach us to tell us our food would take 50 minutes to arrive. We ordered a side of fries, which I think should’ve been served if it would take this long. After this long quiet wait. We had a lot of food that looked amazing. I ordered the steak, clam linguini and seafood dish of the day which was salmon. Now the sirloin itself was a great fresh cut, however was very close to cold when served that the juices of the steak were already drying up within which left a lil dry to chew so I didn’t feel as if it was worth $45. Salmon was great, the clam linguini however was a good 4.5/10. Partner loved her burger and the pork belly and also the mash potatoes was a vibe! So the fries I mentioned? Yup we received them 2 minutes before our desserts was served to us. Being left in that corner felt as if we were forgotten there like there was no music, no other workers to ask if we were fine. We chowed on what we could eat, and waited 20 minutes for someone to either come clean up or give us the desserts menu. I though it was busy as to why we hadn’t seen anyone but when I got sick of waiting, i walked over to request a desserts menu to find out there was hardly anyone in the restaurant, so why did it take long for food, and also lack of service? Overall if we had been told about the wait or received our sides during the wait it would have made our experience a lot better. But the staff and chefs we could see had big and welcoming smiles so I know tonight, was just one of those nights.

The desserts at Portlander restaurant are simply delightful! Their selection offers a delectable array of flavors and textures. From rich and creamy cheesecakes to perfectly balanced fruit tarts, each dessert is a work of art. The presentation is exquisite, and the taste is even better. Whether you have a sweet tooth or not, you won't be disappointed with their delectable treats. A must-visit for dessert enthusiasts in Wellington!

Several hit it out of the park. We arrived without a reservation and when only the bar was open. We asked for a food accommodation and they delivered. The chicken burger was delightful and the 'A LA MODE' was OFF the chart.

Located onsite within The Rydges Hotel on the ground floor. Nice atmosphere and friendly service from the waitresses. Easy access for wheelchairs and parking right in front, on the street. The food was delicious, pork belly and rib eye steak were beautiful and finished off with lovely deserts. Will definitely go there again.
