Worst experience with creamy chicken curry. No taste, no salt and gravy consistency was so poor. Even the butter naan was not up to the mark

2/5 Disappointed by the Hype — Style Over Substance Visited Karma Eatery in Takapuna for the first time after reading several positive reviews, but unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to the expectations. Pros: The ambience is decent, with a cozy vibe that's pleasant for casual dining. The service was polite and reasonably prompt — no complaints there. Cons: The real letdown was the food. I ordered the Chicken Fried Rice (Indo-Chinese style), but what arrived was far from what’s expected of this dish. It felt more like plain rice tossed with chicken curry rather than an actual wok-tossed fried rice. The chicken pieces used clearly seemed repurposed from a curry or biryani — not freshly stir-fried — and lacked the signature smoky or umami flavor typical of Indo-Chinese cuisine. Moreover, the chicken-to-rice ratio was underwhelming, making it feel like poor value for money. For a dish that's meant to be bold, flavorful, and satisfying, this sadly missed the mark on all fronts. Overall, while the atmosphere and service were decent, the food — which should be the highlight — was a major disappointment. Not quite sure how it’s earning such high praise online. Sadly, not worth the hype or the price

A random walk in to a tiny eatery for dinner; ended up with good food in a cozy setting. Love little cozy eateries; not everyone might - the space works best as a bar, but that doesnt do justice to how well the food turned out. Granted this is a first time experience, but the how good the food was forced me to write this review. We had the tikki chat, vegetarian chow mein, lasooni daal and garlic naan. The naan was thin and very well made, the chow mein was very well done too. The lasooni daal was rustic, reminded me of all the road trip dhabas back in India. It was some of the best daal I have had in Auckland in a very long time. Daals are simple dishes, which make it hard to hide mistakes behind a wall of spice and overwhelming flavour (and no it was not a wall of lasson either). Whoever cooked this knows his way around good north indian punjabi cooking. The tikki was very well made. I dont know if its kitchen made or off the shelf, but it crispy on the outside and well cooked inside. Make that a chat and it was a symphony of flavour. I think the daal and the tikki just put the chow mein (which really was good) in shade coz of how good it was. Our experience with the staff was good. A picky eater amongst us has requests on how each dish was to be cooked. They did it very well. The rice that came with the food was an iffy. But I think am placing a high standard on a small eatery and bar in Takapuna. There are 1 year old comments that put the place in shade. My experience did not match those comments. If you are keen on really good simple rustic north indian punjabi food that reminds you of home - this place may be worth it

Karam Eatery and Bar offers a mix of good and average food, but its cozy location on Northshore near Takapuna Beach adds to its charm. If you enjoy oily and spicy dishes, you'll find it to your liking. However, if you prefer a more balanced culinary experience, it might not be the ideal choice. Overall, it's a decent spot to grab a bite, especially if you're in the mood for some spicy indulgence.

We have just had our first Take Out from Karam and it was THE BEST. We have lived in India and this was true authentic food- sensational flavours, great portions, good cuts of meat superbly cooked along with fabulous spices. The owners are so friendly too!!! Highly recommend!!!!

WOW!! full of authentic spice and flavour. Amazing Lamb Biryani with large chunks of meat throughout. The butter chicken was rich and didn't disappoint the flavour going right through the chicken. The Cheese and garlic Naan had ample melted cheese rich w crushed garlic. This place is by far THE BEST place on the shore! with true authentic flavours. My compliments to the chef. We will definitely be back. Our new favorite spot.
