A beautiful little lake surrounded by native bush secured by a "predator proof" fence used to raise young kiwi birds until they are able to fend for themselves (about a year old I think). The area was badly affected by Cyclone Gabrielle in February of 2023 so a lot of the walking tracks are still under repair.

Lovely walking track around Lake Opouahi with abundant bird life and beautiful views. There is a predator proof fence around the reserve to keep out rats, stoats possums, cats and dogs to provide a predator free environment for raising kiwi and other native birds. The lake is spectacular and has plenty of ducks and other water birds on it. There is a reasonable sized carpark by the road and inside the reserve there is a shelter and a public toilet. Obviously this is no place to bring dogs.
