Second Beach is one of Dunedinβs most underrated coastal gemsβa small, secluded cove tucked away just a short walk from the popular St Clair Esplanade. Despite its proximity to one of the cityβs busiest beachfronts, Second Beach offers a sense of calm and privacy that makes it feel like a completely different world. Itβs the perfect spot for anyone seeking a quieter, more intimate slice of the coastline. The beach is known for its rocky shoreline, natural saltwater swimming pool, and impressive cliff faces that create a dramatic yet peaceful atmosphere. While itβs not a traditional sandy beach, its rugged character gives it a unique charm. The gentle sound of waves washing over stones, combined with the calls of seabirds nesting nearby, creates a soothing environment ideal for unwinding or exploring at a leisurely pace. One of the best features of Second Beach is the walking track that leads you there. It winds along the cliffs with stunning ocean views, making the journey just as enjoyable as the destination. Once you arrive, the natural pool carved into the rocks is a standoutβespecially at high tide, when it fills with fresh seawater and becomes a serene spot for a dip. Second Beach is also incredibly photogenic. The interplay of rocks, water, and lightβespecially during sunrise or late afternoonβoffers endless opportunities for beautiful shots. Whether youβre a local or a visitor, itβs a spot that invites you to slow down and appreciate the quieter side of Dunedinβs coastline. For peaceful moments, scenic beauty, and a touch of rugged charm, Second Beach is a must-visit.

Short easy walk to a dead end. Sharp cliff and strong waves, be careful when bringing children or pets.

A lot of surfers. Nothing much to do on the beach itself. The beach walk if quite short. A lot of small business and cafe in the area hence can be hard to find parking.

Very nice spot. Not suitable for swimming cause of the rocks and wildlife (Seals & Penguins). Perfect view point even for groups to relax and if you are an adventurer you even can go a bit further to have an astonishing view over the coastline. Definitely worth a visit!
