Okere Falls, located on New Zealand's North Island, is a captivating destination that offers a blend of natural beauty and adventure. Situated just a short drive from Rotorua, this stunning area features impressive waterfalls cascading through lush greenery, making it an excellent spot for both relaxation and outdoor activities. One of the standout features of Okere Falls is its dynamic white-water rapids, which are a popular site for kayaking and rafting enthusiasts. The falls themselves plunge dramatically, creating a breathtaking sight that is especially striking after rainfall, when the flow is at its peak. An interesting fact about Okere Falls is that it is home to the historic Okere Falls Store, which has been serving the community for over a century and is famed for its traditional Kiwi hospitality. Additionally, the area is part of the Rotorua Lakes District, known for its stunning lakes and geothermal wonders, making it an ideal base for exploring the surrounding attractions. Hiking trails around Okere Falls provide opportunities for visitors to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying scenic views. The trail leading to the falls is relatively easy and suitable for families, making it accessible for everyone. Overall, Okere Falls is a delightful destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. With its picturesque scenery, thrilling water activities, and rich history, it’s a must-visit spot when exploring the North Island.

Wonderful place where we can see the rowers and rafters in action. A lot of walk but worthwhile. It has few points to cover like trout pool, rafting vowing point, there is a caves… and nice walk.

The Okere river is famed for its kayaking and white water rafting which if you are lucky you’ll be able to watch from some of the view points. Some great scenery and a chance to get close to the water. There are some trails to walk and a decent amount of car parking.

What an amazing place! The walks are easy but yet so rewarding to see the mighty falls. Check out my photos for walk times. I highly recommend walking to the bottom of the falls approx 20mins one way and checking out the cave, the stairs can be difficult going down so just keep that in mind. Plenty of parking available at the top, big enough for motorhomes as well and there ate toilets here too.

Easy short walk, Fall track is more easy to walk with waterfall and cave, Ridge track have a good view, Trout pool only have a tiny spot to fish, more hard to fish there

Okere Falls can be viewed from the track that goes opposite the public toilets at Okere Reserve carpark. You can see the whole mighty Okere Falls. I saw some people jumped over the fence and climbed down the hill to see the waterfall from the base. They had a hard time coming up and the ground was muddy. It was advised not to go down. The water was strong and the walk from the carpark was like 2 minutes. I think wheelchairs can go here depending if the ground is dry like the day we went to see Okere Falls

Awesome place to stop for glowworms in the night and a hike and waterfalls in the day. We were lucky to see both kayaks and rafts come down Tutea Falls.
