The Black Oven leans into a burger‑led approach without the fuss. Sides support without crowding the plate. Packaging keeps things in good shape to go. Buns hold well and patties come juicy. There’s always a considered veg choice.

This seemed like a nice enough place when we walked in and the person serving seemed friendly enough. But when the food arrived, the base of the pizza was really thin. It was nice and hot and that’s about all the good things about it. We ordered the Hawaii Five O and The Big Cheese. The pizza was soggy and the toppings fell straight off. On the Big Cheese, the garlic was literal chunks of garlic. On the Hawaii Five O there seemed to be an excessive amount of garlic and it was soggy as well. I wouldn’t recommend this as a place to eat.

First of all, staff was great. Just the one guy working. Only one other family in at the time. The best bits: Pizza's looked great! Base tastes good Chips where nice and crispy The mozzarella sticks where awesome Proper mixed fuel oven, can get the wood fire taste! The not so good bits: Got two pizza's - plain old cheese and the bbq. Too much cheese on the cheese pizza, was overwhelming and ruined the taste. The tomato sauce needs a little refining too. The brisket on the Bbq was amazing! Unfortunately it is so flooded with sauce that it becomes inedible and you can taste the flavours. Conclusion: This could be awesome, needs a little couple of weeks but not bad. Would I go back, probably not but would always say try it if you're in town.

The pizza is incredible. Authentic wood fired, and delicious toppings. The mozzarella sticks are divine with their gorgeous seasoning...my only suggestion is 1 serving of those makes a good starter for four people! We couldn't finish them (just 2 of us). There was no music and the lighting was weird multi-coloured LEDS making it seem like a dark place (and we were there at midday on a sunny day). Only 1 staff member working meant we had to wait longer than expected for water, plates, food. All the other tables were dirty/hadn't been cleared as the staff member didn't have time to do it.

Surprisingly good pizza. I'll admit that perhaps it's just my own experience but I have not had a lot of good pizza in small rural towns but Black Oven was a welcome surprise. Pizza was well done, staff was friendly, facilities were clean with nice decor and a good vibe. Add to that it's in Tirau that is already a magical little town and you are in for a really good experience. I will definitely stop here again

Had been at the hot pools, so glad we went to Tirau for dinner! Fries are the best I've had in awhile. The Tree Hugger (vegan) Pizza was amazing, nice to have a different kind of vegan pizza, the cheese was so good. Hubby had the Whiskey Richard and smashed it back, said the BBQ sauce was delicious and brisket was tender. Basil olive oil was next level. Nice to see lots of staff and everyone was well presented and friendly. We'll definitely recommend to people and come back one day soon.
