The kitchen at Basmati's Indian eatery takes a kebab and pita path and lets the food speak. Easy carry‑out for a simple night in. Serve sizes show solid value. Cuts are sliced to order with good pace. Front‑of‑house runs with calm, helpful energy.

Genuinely the best butter chicken I’ve ever had. Great value for the price and a super authentic taste. The staff were lovely and the store was beautifully decorated as well. 100% recommend, sad i don’t live in Christchurch otherwise i would definitely be a regular

Fantastic service, fast and polite. The food was gorgeous, thick tasty curries and a hot chicken entree that would knock your socks off! Could not complain about a thing.

This is our favourite Indian Restaurant in all of Chistchurch. The food is flavoursome & made with the freshest ingredients. The manager, Naveen is so friendly, kind & helpful and makes us feel so comfortable. We look forward to returning soooon :) ~ Marcus & Tracey

I visited Basmati’s for the very first time with colleagues for lunch on a weekday. I had vegetarian biryani while others had other dishes, including meat dishes. While all of us had a good time, I struggled with my dish because it was more hot / spicy than I could tolerate. I had asked for medium spicy. The staff member explained that I should have asked for mild!! The portion of vegetarian biryani was huge (see photos) and it was quite tasty! The naan (which others had) looked very good too - see photos.

Daal makhani is not what I expected. it was a mix of various lentils topped with a lot of oil. The kadai paneer was just okay. Unfortunately, the butter naan was burned and inedible. I was recommended this place by a friend for its great food, but my experience was disappointing. I urge the staff to ensure that every customer has a pleasant experience. Please take the time to check the curries and bread before packaging them for delivery. Please give food that you would want to feed your family.

Amazing place with great food and super cool staff. I sadly forgot the name of the guy who served us but he had the most amazing attitude and provided amazing service. Portions are large, we got 2 mains and 2 starters to share among 3 people and struggled to finish it all. Absolutely worth your money and time

I’ve eaten in the restaurant, had takeaways and today had delivery. The food is always delicious, and the service from the staff is always exceptional. Because we were ordering delivery for the first time, we were unsure if we’d ordered correctly, so I phoned the restaurant to check. The person was so helpful, and even said they would call me back once we’d placed our order if there was something wrong. Because we’d decided to order differently to our original plan, straight away the restaurant called me back to confirm our order was correct. But as we’d ordered from the 2 for 1 menu, but not the same mains, the restaurant still honoured that 2 for 1 deal and sent out double meals. Thank you for your great hospitality and for the special touch of writing happy birthday on our delivery bag! I really appreciated it ☺️

Best Indian restaurant in Christchurch. Love the service, and the food is amazing. This has become our go to place for Indian food. I’ve ordered small quantities and large quantities for groups (family of 10) at different times and the level taste and service has always been exceptional.

My partner and I have really enjoyed our Malai Kofta and our drinks. The staff that attended us was very friendly, we highly recommend it. Thank you!

On arrival to Basmati's we were immediately greeted and offered to sit at a table of our choosing. The waiter was very attentive and answered our questions and served our drinks very promptly. We ordered 3 items; Anari lamb (medium), Chicken Jalfrezi (mild) and 2x Garlic naan breads. The time for the food to come was around 30 minutes but we did notice that another table of 2 who ordered after us was served their food first and that is the only reason for the 4-star rating for service. The Anari was a new dish for us to dry and although it was nice and the lamb was cooked perfectly, it lacked a depth of flavour and was did not have the expected spice level. It also appeared that the pomegranate which I understood to be a vital component of the dish was sprinkled on top rather than cooked with. The Chicken Jalfrezi was the favourite of the night and the flavour was delicious and spicy. As per the menu this dish says it includes onions, tomatoes and capsicum. Our dish had a few pieces of capsicum but was filled out mostly with beans which we found to be an odd choice. The coriander mentioned in the menu of both these dishes was minimal which was disappointing. Tha garlic naan although tasty appeared to be a wrap rather than handmade bread. In terms of atmosphere it was clean and well decorated with lovely plants although the front door was open most of the time we were there despite us closing it. This restaurant exits on to a main road so it made it a bit noisy and cold. Please check the pricing as the online prices were quite different to the restaurant menus. All in all, if you are looking for an authentic Indian meal this may not be your ideal venue.
