We unfortunately booked here not knowing there was a concert on that night. It was very expensive but we wanted to treat ourselves. I explained when I checked in that we just wanted a nice quiet night but despite this we were given a room on the ground floor directly opposite the concert. No one assisted me with my bags, the windows were filthy, the blinds were dusty and it wasn't very clean. The noise was horrendous. I rang up when it gotta mechanical they could suddenly offer us a better room. My partner was too tired to move though. I spoke to the manager the next day and she showed no empathy whatsoever. She didnt apologize and was downright rude. I know the place was not full so they could have given us a better room away from the concert when I checked in. She lied and said they were full which wasn't true. It's ridiculously overpriced for what it is and the manager needs some serious lessons in customer service. Theory reason she spoke to me like that was because I'm not a wealthy tourist. I would never recommend this place and my one chance for a nice night away from the stress was ruined. The managers attitude was just an extra kick in the stomach for the money we wasted. Much better and cheaper hotels out there.

We spent the first night of our trip at The George (after much hassle with flight delays, which the team was extremely accommodating for!) was one of the most spectacular nights of our trip! The service was unmatched (Thank you Matt!) and George bear will be our travel companion forever! It was the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate after a long journey and breakfast the next morning was spectacular! My only complaint is that I couldn’t stay forever! I would come to Christchurch just to spend a night here again!

We only stayed one night at the George and wished we spent more time at the hotel and in the city itself. Hotel is wonderfully located, making possible a wonderful day at the botanical garden followed by dinner at one of the many restaurants in the business district by the cathedral. Very welcoming front desk and concierge staff who provided excellent personal recommendations for what to see and where to eat. Breakfast was good too, with a friendly and efficient staff who handled the morning rush of groups of travelers on tight schedules with aplomb. Almost certainly the best place to stay in the city, especially if you like small hotels with personality.

I took my mum to the 50 bistro for a joint birthday treat. It could not have been better. We shared the bread plate with the most divine smoked butter to start, then mum had a grouper dish with corn and chorizo it was delicious. I had the rib dish with mashed potato so silky they melted on the mouth. It also had mushrooms. It was divine. I had a desert which I shouldn't have as the staff bought us a lovely plate written with happy birthday and some lovely little desert treats, my favourite was the homemade turkish delight. This meal could not have been better, easy parking, delicious food and fantastic staff.

Lovely hotel, a very clean and luxurious hotel. The rooms are well appointed with little delightful and surprising touches not seen anywhere else by me. The food service was outstanding as was the room cleaning. We had fun with little George. (You’ll find out if you stay here.). Helpful staff.

This superb hotel is probably my favourite place to stay in Christchurch. Perfectly located on a quiet street next to Hagley park, (but still close enough to the city centre action to be convenient) the service at The George is impeccable: friendly, helpful and professional. The bank of EV chargers for both Teslas and standard cars easily makes this one of the best locations in the city to stay. The restaurant has a selection sumptuous dishes on the museum and the rooms are immaculate. Highly recommended!

We loved this hotel. Everything about it perhaps with the exception of the shower. (It was perfectly acceptable but wouldn’t win our best shower in hotel competition). Other than that, the hotel was great. We stayed in the Residence, which was quiet and private. We also ate in the restaurant and thought that the food was fine. All of the staff were friendly and polite. It couldn’t have been better.

Great hotel just on the outskirts of town next to the botanical gardens. Room was really well kept with all the amenities you may want. Turn down was a surprise and well received. Matt on reception was also super helpful with ideas for a walk into Christchurch.

We recently stayed at the George in Christchurch while touring the South Island. The rooms were lovely, location great, right near the park, and we used the bicycles, free of charge to pedal around this cycle-friendly city. Mostly I'm writing to recognize the wonderful staff at this hotel. They were friendly and helpful from start to finish. Our flight home was delayed 2 days and they made an extra effort to accommodate us. In particular, Charise Martin the Front Office Manager, was always helpful, efficient, kind and smiling. Thanks for making our stay so pleasant!

Very sad to be writing, what is, a pretty negative review of our experience at Bistro 50 at The George Hotel. After enjoying many memorable experience over 20 years or more we had a very poor experience in October 22 and gave the Hotel our views in a private email we were assured measures were in place to improve both the food and service. We gave the Restaurant another chance on the 7th December but once again very disappointed. The only positive was the young man who served us, although woefully inexperienced, was very personable and really wanted to help. Food bland at best, green salad requested had to be reminded and on arrival consisted of 2 wilted lettuce leaves far too much dressing and several, what I assume. were pickled walnuts not what I would consider a green salad. Chocolate dessert, whilst it looked fine was very bland. Not sure how that happens. No light, or lower alcohol wine available and staff, over all, seemed lost and with out direction. Knowledge of wines and cocktails very limited. Asked for a whiskey sour staff had no idea and said they would look it up on you tube!!! No longer prepared to visit what was once our very favourite Hotel and Restaurant Rosalie Maxwell
