   I learnt guitar from John for over six years from the age of 11 until I was accepted into the New Zealand School of Music in 2015. John taught me almost everything I knew about classical guitar, right from how to read music to how to prepare for a university audition. His consistency in teaching style and contagious passion for the guitar kept me hooked, and now it is what I am building my career around. John was a great first teacher.

   I have been receiving guitar lessons from John for over 3 months now and have found him to be very good and completely professional. I travel with my job and John has been very helpful in allowing me to reschedule “catch up” lessons from time to time if needed. His style is clear and concise and he makes the lessons fun. I have already reccommended a friend to get lessons from John and would not hesitate in doing so again to anyone who is looking to learn how to play classical guitar.

   John has been a wonderful guitar teacher for the past 2 years I have been taking lessons with him. I had been playing electric guitar for about 6-7 years before taking lessons with John and was largely self taught with minimal understanding of theory. Since taking lessons with John I had learnt how to read sheet music within a couple of months and had greatly expanded upon my understanding of the instrument. I look forward to each lesson each week as John has a great sense of humour and is very understanding of what a student requires to progress. I highly recommend John as a Guitar Teacher.

   I am have been playing guitar for years when I wanted to progress further in classical guitar and found John to help me with this. He is a wonderful guitar teacher, extremely knowledgable and very patient (especially with one who has picked up habits from other ways/styles of guitar playing). He requests high standards from students, and this is done with gentle persistence and a lot of humour. John is always very accommodating with his time, diligently in contact by phone, email and text when arranging lessons to suit, and very kindly offering make-up lessons when the situation appropriated the requirement.

   After trying to teach myself guitar and not progressing I decided to get lessons. John Wakelin was recommended to me, and after half a year of lessons I have found that my playing has improved rapidly. John caters for all ability levels with particular emphasis on establishing and maintaining good habits and techniques. John provides a professional but relaxed and fun learning environment. I work various shift patterns and have found John very accommodating in scheduling my lessons to suit. He is also very flexible when it comes to rescheduling missed lessons due to illness or work commitments. I would not hesitate in recommending John to any guitar student.
