Took a ferry 58$ return from CBD and we did 11km 3h hiking/exploring the island. Have to come back for full day and explore the other parts too. Take good shoes as the terrain is very hard lava rocks.

There is lots of space to sit in the shade with a great view of the ocean near the wharf. Make sure you bring your own water and snacks as you cannot purchase these things on the island. The hike to the summit has an elevation to get the blood pumping. Parts of the hike are lush with vegetation and other parts have a lava rock landscape. The trail is slippy and irregular due to the lava rock. The lava tube is worth the visit but the crater wasn't what I expected. Vegetarian has grown in it making the crater difficult to distinguish.

Tranquil and peaceful. Great trail to the top and then to the lava tubes. Pristine environment. I hope the visitors continue to respect and appreciate the value of this island in its natural habitat.

Did the summit hike and the extra path. It was great as we left the crowds behind. The path transforms from volcanic rock to soft moss. Really needed 3 hours to do the hike we chose but only had 2.5 hours to avoid missing our ferry.

A superb hike through dense forest and volcanic rock on this young volcano. There are a few walking routes from which to choose, from leisurely and scenic to a straight-up challenging climb. Stunning views at the top. We had taken the 10am ferry, completed our hike and got back to the wharf in time for the 2:20 return ferry.

Loved the visit to Rangitoto Island! A good walk around to the light house out in the water, as close as could get to it without a boat. Then up to the summit, great views of Auckland and around. But always have to watch where you walk.

Only way on or off the island with a ferry from the main island to Rangitoto. Surprisingly nice facilities with bathrooms, lots of shaded areas/benches to rest while waiting. Nice maps to help you get oriented when you arrive on the island for the first time.

amazing place, the view is so good. But a little bit tired to climb it, make sure you bring water and food.
