What an amazing spot! It is a hidden gem in the city of Auckland right next to a gorgeous park. John Sweetman has done the city a huge favor by renovating this building and keeping the history as intact as possible. He and his wife Mel are wonderful souls who enjoy people and go the extra mile. I love his stories and could listen to him for hours. My husband and I will return here and strongly recommend this place to people who love to travel and learn the history and culture of the area.

Very quaint but beautiful building steeped in history and tradition right in the centre of the city. John has kept it as original as possible and has done an amazing job with it. John is very proud of Auckland and will happily fill you in on its history and traditions, all while making you a delicious feed of bacon and eggs for breakfast. If staying in Auckland, this is definitely the place to rest your weary head. Best B&B we have ever stayed in, by a mile.

This bed and breakfast was amazing. The owners are so kind and if you need a tip on a place to go, they have you covered! The building is over 100 years old and has been restored as such. Stepping through the front door is like stepping back in time. The location is great as well. A quick walk to the downtown area, Newmarket, and Parnell.

Centrally located, gorgeous building and furnishings. Beautiful attention to detail. Felt very at home and welcome. I was devastated I only stayed for one night, that cast iron bath looked wonderful to soak in! The hosts were very warm and welcoming. John is full of great yarns and Knowledge!! Mel is so kind and lovely. Can't wait to stay again!

John and Mel are just the most lovely hosts! my husband and i stayed here for 1 night and were warmly greeted with over the top hospitality that made us feel right at home and comfortable! The historical home is beautiful, and the breakfast was so tasty! John was super knowledgable about NZ sights and points of interest- it was great to hear the story and history of the house as well!

Impossible not to give this five stars. The host John Sweetman is an exceptional gentleman. Not only that the position is right in the historic precinct of downtown Auckland moments away from motorway access if you’re travelling. A very easy walk to everything in the epicentre of the city. Free parking incredible breakfast drink on arrival. If you enjoy character homes with characters in them, you must stay here.

Gorgeous, historic house with the most warm & friendly couple running it. The rooms are so cool with the way they have a Victorian feel and so many charming little details. And of course: the fact that they’re welcoming to all kinds of dogs was a big plus for us!

We had a great stay here! John was a great host. He met us on the curb and helped us get our luggage inside and up to our room! The place is in a very walkable location to resturants and such. The breakfast was amazing and we loved meeting the two dogs - Tiny Tina was very cute. The bed was cozy, and the house has so much history! John told us some of the great places to visit in Auckland. Thank you, John and Melaia, for hosting us other Sweets!

I have stayed here multiple times over a period of fifteen years or so, both alone and with one of my children. I have stayed in just about all rooms ever used for guests. All of them are comfortable and oozing with Edwardian charm. Don't come here if you like minimalistic grey & black with white walls. This house has warm toned brown wood, vintage fittings, I had a pull for the ceiling light right by the bed! And there is a clawfoot bath in the shared upstairs bathroom. Yes, some rooms share a bathroom, which is normal for B&Bs. John and Mel are welcoming, gracious hosts who cater to all your needs (even popping down to the shops to get some biscuits to serve with a pot of tea outside breakfast time). They will go above and beyond to make you feel welcome and valued as guests. I will happily pay a premium to support locals like John & Mel in their business and keep this lovingly cared for home out of developers' claws. Did I mention the wine in the evening and the amazing breakfast in the morning? Can't wait to come back. One thing to know is that there are two dogs on the property (very friendly) so be aware if you have allergies.

Me and my partner went on a much needed weekend away in Auckland. We stayed at the Braemar Bed and Breakfast and it was the best experience we’ve had so far. John and his wife were so accommodating, chatty and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. We will definitely be using Braemar as our usual accomodation everytime were visiting Auckland!!!
