Muriwai Beach is a beautiful west coast spot near Auckland with black sand, strong waves, and great sunsets. The gannet colony and coastal views are amazing. Perfect for walks, photos, and enjoying nature. Highly recommended.

Maukatia Bay is a hidden gem on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula. The views across the water to Auckland are absolutely stunningβ€”perfect for photos, especially at sunrise or sunset. It's a peaceful spot, ideal for a relaxing day out. We were hoping to spot some birds, but it seems we were there during the off-season, so no luck this time. Still, the scenery made up for it! The only downside was the windβ€”it was quite breezy when we visited, so make sure to bring a jacket if you're planning to stay for a while. Overall, Matakatia Bay is a beautiful and tranquil spot that's well worth a visit.

Truly a must-visit. It's an experience that feels almost otherworldly, particularly when you catch one of those spectacular west coast sunsets. Be aware! This popular spot can get crowded, especially during peak season and around sunset. Beyond the stunning views, the location is surprisingly well-equipped. The presence of clean, well-maintained public restrooms is a definite plus.. The spacious car park offers flexibility; you can enjoy the scenery from the comfort of your vehicle, set up a picnic, or take a short stroll down to the beach for a closer look at the gannets and the powerful surf.

Amazing views of the colony. We were there during mating season so we got to see the babies and parents swooping around to go get food. It was an excellent experience! Wear sunscreen!! We lost track of time taking pictures of the birds and got a little burnt.

Spent a lovely evening watching the gannets come back to land and feed their young. Beautiful track and wooden lookout so you can get very close to the birds now

Totally free and a gorgeous walk will reward you with views out over the ocean, across two beaches (including a lovely black sand beach on one side) and the Gannet Colony, which is well worth the walk! When we went there were a number of just hatched little birds and it was such a spectacular sight!

I recently visited the Muriwai Gannet Colony Lookout and had a fantastic experience. The lookout is located on the west coast of Auckland, providing stunning views of the ocean and surrounding countryside. But the real highlight of the lookout is the opportunity to get up close and personal with the gannets. The birds are only a few metres away, and you can watch them in their natural habitat as they nest and raise their chicks. It's an amazing and unique experience that you won't find anywhere else. Overall, I highly recommend the Muriwai Gannet Colony Lookout for anyone looking to experience the beauty of New Zealand's west coast and get up close and personal with these amazing birds. It's an experience you won't forget.
