I feel this place has taken a real downturn over the last 18 months. It used to be my go-to for fish and chips or Chinese, but the last few visits have been really disappointing. The food quality has dropped noticeably, and the portion sizes are honestly terrible for what you pay. My most recent order included potato fritters and what was supposed to be $10 worth of chips. I only ordered that much because the previous time we got a scoupe and ended up with about fifteen chips total. Unfortunately, things still haven’t improved, the value and portion sizes just aren’t there anymore. The Chinese dishes, though, are still beautiful which makes me really hope things turn around overall. Hopefully things will get better in the new year.

I used to be a big fan of this place — we were regular customers and always enjoyed the food. But one experience completely changed my opinion. One day, I happened to be nearby and popped in just to ask if they could quickly rinse some strawberries I had bought for my son. The girl who usually served us looked at me and said, “Are you going to order something? If not, I’m not going to wash them for you.” I was honestly shocked and really disappointed. After being such loyal customers, that response felt rude and unnecessary. Since that day, I’ve stopped going altogether. My husband still goes from time to time, but for me, that moment was enough to never return. Great food or not, customer service matters — and that experience completely ruined the place for me.

On a country road where the grapes are grown, Where Auckland's sun on the hills is thrown, Lies Kumeu, a place of vines and green, A quiet, farming, and historic scene. But turn your wheel from the cellar door, And you will find the sea's abundant store; For though the vineyards line the dusty street, The salty bounty makes the air complete. The Coastal Kinship The sea is near, though not in sight you see, From Muriwai’s black sand, wild and free. The Tasman roars, its powerful, western hand, Pushes the freshness back to Kumeu land. It doesn't boast the wharf or rocking tide, But where the fish and chips are served with pride— A takeaway of legend, a simple bar, Where ocean harvest travels near and far. The Golden Bounty Here is the fryer's hum, a steady sound, The crisped-up coating, golden all around. It is the heart of Kiwi comfort food, To stand and wait, misunderstood By those who seek a fancy, white-cloth meal, For this is pleasure utterly real. A generous scoop of chips, a golden mound, Where crunchy corners joyfully are found. And for the fish, the king of all the plate, The Snapper waits, a royal, tender fate. Its flesh is white, a delicate, sweet prize, Which in the lightest batter gently lies. Or Gurnard soft, a firm and milky flake, The simple pleasure that your soul can take. And Tarakihi, too, a cherished name, For takeaway glory and its honest fame. Treasures from the Deep But look beyond the fillets, straight and true, The ocean gifts that New Zealanders love, all for you: The scallop plump, encased in airy gold, A tender morsel, a story to be told Of sandy bottoms where the divers roam, To bring this perfect flavour back to home. The mussel, fat and juicy, dark and green, Battered and deep-fried, a vibrant, salty scene. And for the brave, a half-shell feast is laid, Fresh oysters chilled, a pearl in emerald shade. A dash of lemon, bright upon the tongue, The taste of winter where the sea is young. The squid rings curl, a white and rubbery grace, A quick, hot chew in this suburban place. The prawn twisters—a spicy, clever turn, For a hungry palate, a lesson you must learn: That the best cuisine is not the most high-class, But the fresh ingredient that quickly comes to pass. The Meal and the Moment The paper wraps it tight, the steam is trapped within, A fragrant secret where the journey can begin. You walk outside beneath the evening light, And hold the bundle, heavy, hot, and bright. No harbor view, no fishing boat in sight, Just cars on Main Road and the fading light. But on a bench, or home beside the telly, This taste of Aotearoa fills your belly. From vineyard dust to the ocean's dark retreat, Kumeu seafood makes the circle sweet. A humble shop, a fryer's hiss and sigh, Serving up freshness underneath the sky. The land provides the grape, the sea the fish, A perfect, rustic, satisfying dish. What's your favourite fish to have from a classic fish and chips shop?

$45 of rubbish!! We got 1 fish (batter soggy and raw), 1 crab stick (wet batter), 1 scoop of chips (over cooked & over salted), sweet & sour wontons (pork uncooked) and beef Shanghai noodles (all cabbage & noodle, a few bits of beef). The photos show all!! The food went in the bin. Absolutely appalling that a fish n chip shop cannot properly cook anything! Never going back!
