   when youre a tiny fish supplies venue, caged directly between two fish and chips stores, really, the poem writes itself. i have never been as appalled at the state of a freshwater fish adoption centre as maximum pet supplies lower hutt. i love fish. these people clearly do not, nor do they value the integrity and wellbeing of their customers. i say this as someone who keeps freshwater fish thriving in a 216L tank; your tanks are not big enough. your lack of enrichment and care put into the living situations of these innocent and helpless creatures makes me, frankly, quite nauseous. i am scared for the future of fish at your facilities if things continue as they are. please pay more attention to fishkeeping regulations and spare me the passive aggressive reply. i dont want it. do better. lyall bay has a far more suitable pet centre :) friendly, attentive staff, beautiful displays of tanks, and most importantly: space to breathe. you won't regret visiting them.

   Visited because of their impressive range of fish online which was interesting to me as a tropical fish keeper, was met with many tanks that looked poorly cared for and were too small in size. Many of these tanks had dead or dying fish in them, very visibly, and while I understand not all fish will survive importing processes and that this is inevitable in the business, there seemed a lack of care to remove the bodies which increases risks to other fish. The birds were in far too small cages for their numbers, too. I do not believe this store is taking correct care of their animals and they should not have them in such high numbers if they cannot do this. EDIT: I did not talk to the employee at the time as I was there alone and as a woman, was worried about opening up a conversation that would likely come across as accusing with the male staff member. Based on the dismissive nature of this reply, I made the correct choice. If it had been one dead fish, I would have politely brought it up so the situation could be handled as I have done at other pet stores before. But because of the numbers and other concerning conditions I did not feel comfortable. This response was unprofessional of you as a company and a reasonable explanation could have been useful instead of absolute dismissal.

   Edit: Their response unfortunately reinforces my experience of unprofessional and unethical behaviour and why I felt the need to write this review in the first place. Feeding fish food that is several years past its date can be unsafe and doesn’t prioritise the welfare of the animals, which was the core concern I raised. I’ve explained everything in my original review and stand by it. I ordered a dated Fluval Bug Bites bag online from Maximum Pet Supplies. The listing described the product as ‘DATED’ but did not state how old it actually was. When it arrived, I discovered it was over two years past the expiry date—far older than most customers would reasonably expect. Pet food this far past date could be unsafe or have significantly reduced nutritional value, so shoppers should be fully informed before purchasing. When I raised this with the shop, their responses, both by email and in person, were unprofessional and did not resolve the issue. The product has since been removed from their website, which suggests it may not have met expected standards. Overall, this experience demonstrated poor customer service and a lack of attention to fair trading obligations.

   I love this store! They really look after their customers and go the extra mile for you. You also get the best greetings when you enter the store especially from their lil fur baby Mia. All my fish and live plants are from this store, and I wouldn't want to go anywhere else. The best local pet store, and definetly worth the visit as they have all sorts of healthy and thriving animals. Their knowledge is so extensive that they've helped me alot with my fish keeping journey. Highly recommend this place!

   Brilliant prices and products, the aquatic plants are super healthy and well packaged (and such a generous amount) and everything was on my doorstep in Northland less than 24 hours after dispatch. Insane! Communication was also 12/10. Best retail experience, new favourite pet supply store!
