The team at Ortega delighted us even before we arrived for our reservation. They got in touch well in advance and in the warmest, most welcoming way, to let us know that a big event nearby could impede traffic and did it it the warmest. From then on, it only got better. You know you're in a good place when every member of staff seems to be filled with genuine love for their work, and that's exactly how it felt the whole time we were there. As for the food, it is most definitely some of the very best Wellington has to offer. It's not just that everything is of top quality and expertly prepared; there is also a lot of attention that is being paid to presentation, flavour profiles and textures. Each dish was perfectly balanced in both rich tastes and colours. The beverage selection was also top notch. The value for money is also excellent, with a bill that wasn't at all that high, especially considering the quality of the experience. This is an absolute must have in Wellington and an experience we look forward to enjoying again.

Had a lovely solo dinner at the bar at Ortega Fish Shack. From booking to bye, the vibe was relaxed and welcoming, and the lady behind the bar was especially friendly β€” she made dining alone feel genuinely comfortable. The steamed warehou was delicate and beautifully cooked, the kingfish ceviche fresh and well balanced, and the cocktails were excellent β€” the Rum, Sodomy and the Lash and a classic Negroni both spot on. Easy, thoughtful seafood and great hospitality. I’d happily return.

Such a lovely restaurant. Always our first choice when in wellington. So many classics that have been on the menu for years. Our waitress from Scotland was incredible. Amazing wine list. Great consistent quality food. Prawns, Ceviche and Steak are always a favourite. Love that you can get the prawns as a main and the generous amount of bread they give to soak up the sauce. Battered Oysters and the snapper french toast sandwich was a great way to start. Warehou Rilletes were great and generous portion, Same with the Lamb! It can get pretty loud but thats all good. Bartender working this Tuesday night was so kind and knowledgeable! There seemed to be a wedding being celebrated upstairs and that didn’t affect service or efficiency at all :)

Cozy, welcoming restaurant with a simple menu that’s exceptionally well executed. The staff are well trained and genuinely knowledgeable about the dishes. If you’re a seafood lover, this place is a must-visit. It’s a solid 4.5 stars for me (table settings and furniture were bit off putting), but I’m happily giving it 5 to set it apart from other four-star spots.

Wow wow wow. A truly transcendent dining experience, Ortega Fish Shack is a shining exemplar of culinary excellence, rivaling our beloved Chef's Table. Every aspect of our visit was nothing short of extraordinary. The service was impeccable, the food sublime. The oysters were a revelation, the steak cooked to perfection. Honestly, it's a testament to the power of exceptional cuisine to uplift and inspire.

Fantastic seafood restaurant. Extensive wine list and range of other drinks. Snapper and octopus both cooked to perfection. Crepes were probably the best I've ever had. Excellent customer service. Initially came here for oysters, but even though they were unavailable tonight we still had a great meal. Loved the suggested drink pairings for the desserts.

Ortega was a recommendation from an Auckland chef and we were not disappointed. Firstly, the staff were exemplary, friendly, knowledgeable and everyone of them was in attendance. The wine recommendations were appreciated and the menu was a hard to choose. No food envy from anyone though as all the meals were ample and thoroughly delicious. This is a highly recommend!

This restaurant was amazing! The service was excellent and the food was up there with the best we have had and we like to eat out a lot :) Highly recommend! There is nothing we would fault.

Long overdue review of Ortega. This is based on when we visited in January. We are creatures of habit so we came here 2 nights in a row after a fantastic meal of seafood consisting of oyster, ceviche, mussel - definitely try the teeny weeny French toast fish sandwich - and great wine selection. Place was popular with locals since it was packed on both days. Great vibe too. Shoutout to the owner Davey and bartender Frederico for making us feel at home and for introducing us to some special wines!

Fantastic food and good service - able to alter dishes to serve gluten free options. For a seafood restaurant the beef was incredible and cooked perfectly to order.
