The service staff couldn't be faulted. I was surprised my husband wasn't asked how he wanted hi steak he said it was okay but not as rare as he would have chosen and the chips were hard and took a bot to chew but the blue cod was impeccable very fresh and a lovely light batter.

The best fish and chips weβve had in years We stumbled upon The Best Cafe in Dunedin and what a find! We ordered the blue cod meal and the pan-fried fish of the day (gurnard) and were blown away. We were greeted by Lily, who was lovely and welcoming. We later learned she also helped prepare our meals - what a talent! The fish and chips were hands down some of the best weβve eaten in many years. Fresh, full of flavour, and reminiscent of the fish and chips of our childhoods, back when it was done properly. If youβre in Dunedin and looking for exceptional fish, look no further. Five stars well deserved.

Unfortunately disappointing, overall. The oysters were amazing and the rest of the products also seem to have a high quality. However, the way they were prepared were mediocre, from my point of view. It is like a fast food restaurant with prices that are quite high (potentially justified by the products they use). My judgement might be clouded here because we were in another restaurant the night before and had unbelievable food for a price that wasnβt much higher. But still - would recommend the place for oysters, not for the rest.

I liked the look of the place, it's split into take away and an eat-in restaurant. Looks very cute and vintage. I only took take aways so i can't speak for the restaurant. Got chips and blue cod, half a scoop of chips was plenty and tasted good and crispy, the fish was fresh but very small for the 13$ price.

A modest cafe but very clean throughout. Went with the seafood platter to taste as much New Zealand as possible. All was delicious. Presentation is simple but perfection. Worth the trip even if it was 13,000 KMs !

The look of this place drew us straight in. Reminded us of the old fashioned fish and chips shops in the UK. The food didn't disappoint. The cod and chips were amazing! We were especially impressed with the additional bread and butter and vinegar on the table already! The service was quick, and thoughtful. It was just what we needed on a cool day in July.

Walk through the doors of this place and walk back in time! With the retro decor, formica tables and bread and butter served as an entrΓ©e, I am a kid back in the 1960s or 70s New Zealand once more. I have only had the fish which always comes in the lightest of batter with a little "kiwi" style salad and chips. Well worth a traditional Friday night visit.

Cosy atmosphere. Friendly staff. Delicious food. Price at current market price. Staff is very precise on what is frozen, as oysters are not in season. Fish & Chips was yum, forgot to take photo. Coleslaw was very fresh, I think vinegar based. In my view I liked how it was not creamy which went well with battered food. Paua Pattie was filled with great amount of PAUA, for the price I was impressed. Tartare Sauce filled with generous amount of chopped pickles &/or capers. Good quick dinner for two people. Also this is the first fish & chips restaurant I left without smelling like fried food on my clothes and hair. Definitely an eatery I will visit again.

Great food, impeccable service. This is a small shop, a small shop with a history of 90 years, a small shop worthy of respect. They not only treasured the restaurant's earliest menu, but also treasured the menu full of customer comments. A restaurant that truly cares about customers will surely become a century-old restaurant, come on!

The food is great, and so is the service. The two employees on duty front of house were really friendly and conversational. There were some items that weren't available which is completely understandable as it's a seasonal game, but that's not the reason for 1 less star. My wife and I feel the portions are quite small compared to what we are used to with seafood. My wife typically gets full easily, but we both still had hunger after our meals. I was surprised at little volume of chips given for the fish meals, but they do give you complimentary bread and butter which is nice.
