A Challenging Climb with Incredible Nature The Hakarimata Summit trail is a beautiful and well-preserved hike, but be prepared—it is definitely a moderate to hard trek! The famous "stairway" is a serious workout, but the effort is worth it to experience such a pristine environment. Nature lovers will be thrilled by the biodiversity here. We were lucky enough to spot Tūī, New Zealand Fantails, and Wood Pigeons on our hiking day. What impressed us most, however, was the visible effort to conserve New Zealand's native trees. The track is designed to protect the ancient roots, and the focus on preventing Kauri dieback highlights the importance of preserving this remnant of original lowland forest. It is a well-maintained trail that offers a great fitness challenge while educating visitors on the value of our native bush.

Quite accessible and close to Hamilton. Very convenient and short hike. Can be a little intense for people that are not used to stairs but it should take around 38 to 40mins on a reasonable pace going up (one way). Can take a little longer or shorter depending on your fitness level. View is great and the people on the hike are usually quite supportive and friendly. Great place for training as well. Bonus: if you go during night time there are a decent amount of glow worms on the flat part of the track. You also might run into a few possums if you do go up at night.

Easy 1500 odd steps or so. It's a great cardio but does have a few lookouts and waterfalls. Good fun but it's all stairs. Legs will get an workout. Summit views are amazing.

Hakarimata Summit Track, Ngāruawāhia The Hakarimata Summit Track offers a rewarding yet challenging experience for hikers and fitness enthusiasts alike. Access & Parking: Starting from Brownlee Avenue, the track begins with the Waterworks Walk. Note that parking is limited, and the area can become quite busy, especially during peak times. Arriving early is advisable to secure a spot. Trail Experience: The initial section of the trail passes by the water treatment plant on the right. Soon after, the ascent begins with a well-constructed series of steps—approximately 1,349 in total—leading up to the summit at 374 meters above sea level. The track is enveloped by lush native bush, providing ample shade but also resulting in high humidity levels. Some sections of the stairs remain damp due to limited sunlight, making them slippery; caution is advised. Additionally, parts of the path may have standing water, so appropriate footwear is recommended. Atmosphere: The trail is popular among locals and visitors, with many using it for jogging or fitness training. Despite the crowd, the natural surroundings offer a serene environment, with the sounds of native birds and the occasional glimpse of small waterfalls enhancing the experience. Summit & Views: While I didn't reach the summit on this visit, the viewing platform at the top is reputed to offer expansive views across the Waikato Basin and towards Mount Ruapehu on clear days. The effort to reach the top is said to be well worth it for the panoramic scenery. Facilities: There are restrooms available at the car park, and the trail is well-maintained by the Department of Conservation. However, no dogs are allowed on the track to protect the native wildlife. Conclusion: The Hakarimata Summit Track is a challenging yet fulfilling hike that offers both physical exertion and natural beauty. It's an excellent option for those looking to combine fitness with the opportunity to enjoy New Zealand's native bush. Just be prepared for the crowds and the climb!

One of my favorite short hikes. Challenging enough. Took us maybe 40 minutes to reach the top. Beautiful views and luscious nature. Highly recommend.

I'm not an experienced hiker at all, so I found the climb a little steep, but it was a refreshing and beautiful track. The view at the top was so worth it! The are lots of motivational quotes along the way, and lots of lovely climbers!

Go early in the morning! There are few paths that you can use but I mostly go to summit which the shortest route. There are lot of steps so if you are not fit, it might be challenging for you.

Great hiking track and one of the more challenging ones! Very well-maintained path, there were stairs after stairs all the way up to the summit (roughly 1 km & 50mins - 1 hour one way). We went on the weekday so it wasn’t busy. Ensure you bring sunscreen and hat.
