Stayed at this hostel on Labour Day weekend and didn’t have the best experience. The hostel isn’t very sociable as there were many long term guests who didn’t really socialise. The rooms were fine but a bit dated. Kitchen facilities were good. The big negative for me was when I came back from an evening out and one of the other guests started being extremely racist towards me. After a while I snapped back at him at which point he went to the staff member on night shift and told him I don’t stay here and to kick me out. The night staff came and told me to leave as I don’t stay here to which I told him I do and asked why he believed the guest who had been racist to me instead of me or even why he didn’t confirm himself before trying to kick me out. It was only when the other guests in my dorm told him I stayed here that he left. I was going to raise a complaint with the manager the next day but I was leaving that day anyway and didn’t really have any confidence they’d do anything about or to make it right based on my experience with the staff there over my stay.

Stayed here to see the full moon on the mount and had such a nice evening in the natural local beauty. Upon arrival there was a blonde Brazilian receptionist who was lovely and welcoming. When I returned to sleep I noticed the room became stuffy with a strong sour odor present and it was cold. I kept the blanket tucked under my feet to stay warm. Loud trucks thru the night woke me up because I guess they speed when there’s no traffic. Woke up with sinuses blocked and a headache from the stuffiness. Kindly told Alfie at the front desk about the experience and he immediately started smiling arrogantly “you didn’t expect it to be loud on a street front?” .. no, would’ve liked to have known that as I was referred over from the other location to be closer to the mount, but the other location had speed bumps in front. Same price 10 minutes away, probably very different experience. Anyway Alfie slipped in insults left and right and I wouldn’t engage with him anymore so he got meaner and insulting right up until I walked out of the front door. What a choice way to try to push a paying guest to be upset and unwelcome-literally saying don’t come back because I wouldn’t stand there and take his barrage of insults. Thankfully, I tuned him out because he doesn’t realize words can be weapons. At no point did I make the matter personal toward him but he was very unprofessional and nearly ruined my morning after the worst night of sleep I’ve had in a month in New Zealand.

great location! walking distance to the city centre and the beach. The beds have this little detail about them that i loved: they have a little shelf you can use as a night stand even on the top bunk beds. There are lots of posters about stuff thats going on in town which i think its cool. Also, the staff is so nice and they make sure the whole place is super clean all the time. Overall i definitely stay there again, i believe its a place that thinks a lot about whats like to be a backpacker, i felt really welcomed

I stayed here for 1,5 month and it has been a great experience! Loved the mount, loved the staff, hostel was clean and well maintained. A little pricy but worth the cost. Close to the beach and not too far from the bars. I really enjoyed my stay here and it will always have a place in my heart! The only feedback I have is that the bunk beds are wobbly and only the bottom bunk has curtains.

We were there for a few days with my boyfriend, the very good space, especially the kitchen is very equipped for the number of people there. But I want to highlight Rosie attention, she was very kind and helped us with everything.

Amazing place ! I stayed 2 months at PCL. Staff is very welcoming, helping, friendly. You can work there or find a job at the mount. They offer the possibility to have a long term room if you want to stay for a long period. Place very clean, kitchen with everything you need to cook great meals. Everything is very well maintained. We feel good there !

Stayed here numerous times over the past ten years and consistently a great experience. All areas are clean, staff super friendly and guests always happy to share a yarn. Thoroughly deserves the numerous awards it has won over the years. Plenty of different dorm types to choose from plus private room is a good size with own sink. TV room very social as is the kitchen leading to an outside covered area.
