First of all the staff is sometimes kinda not unfriendly but ignorant?! But overall still nice tho. The room is good but nothing extraordinary, especially when your view is towards the inside of the building. Also the carpet is badly patched and the wallpaper is coming off partly and the walls are thin but apart from that the room and en-suite bathroom is good. Great location aswell. Overall would recommend but nothing really fancy.

Very large room, decently comfortable bed. Bed linens did not appear to have been changed after the previous customer. The furnishings were out dated but in good repair. Strange to have a shower over the bathtub, had 2 steps to get into the tub which made getting out a little precarious, shower head was at chest height so had to kneel to wash my hair.

Stayed 2 nights. I spent many nights in this hotel in the early 2000s. The character hasn't changed, it is old world delightful. The room was clean and well serviced. This was a nostalgic stay for me but I am really happy I chose the "La Grand". It is incredibly good value for money. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Parking was a bit of an issue so I parked in the Wilson's car park across the road at the back of the hotel. Location is great though, right in the middle of everything. Restaurants, night life, Waikato Hospital 5 minutes away. The cost was really good as well .

Enjoyed my one night stay on a Thursday night in October. Room - Superior Queen #110. $92 nzd. Pros -Cheap -Comfy mattress -Great location -Clean -Spacious room and bathroom -Heat pump which was on when i arrived which kept the room at a comfy temp. -Kind front desk woman on arrival. -Old world architecture. Cons -Noisy heat pump (albeit grateful there was one) -No sound insulation so can hear footsteps easily. -Bed was 2 x singles pushed together and had to sleep either side of the gap. Tip - book a superior room type. It's my experience these are better quality. When you book the lead in room category (deluxe) they're cheaper for a reason. I would return but not on a Friday or Saturday as the sound of the street noise and night clubs would be heard easily. Thanks for a nice stay.

I really don't like giving bad reviews, but this hotel definitely does not deserve it's claimed 4 stars. Beds were terrible soft, shower needed surgical precision to operate. Parking was ok. There was no breakfast offered, this hotel is just a bed, this can be forgiven because of the hotel is in a fantastic location, with lots of restaurants and cafes in walking distance, but it's deco really needs to be updated from its current 70's look. As a positive, reception staff and housekeeping were friendly

Central and easy walking distance to all restaurants but for a weekend stay very noisy with loud exhausts from cars in main road. Window didn't shut properly which didn't help. Dated as per other comments but staff were friendly. Lift was a fun experience. Nice balcony to eat breakfast on but it was old and you get what you pay for.

Location is fantastic, right in the city centre. Parking right behind the hotel costs $20 day which is reasonable, and the guy that checked us suggested parking on road for free as it was a public holiday. Overall the building is fairly shabby. Had the feel of something that would have been fancy 50 years ago but now is old and tired. Don't use the stairs, there was a rank smell right up the stairwell, made us feel a little suck. Room was clean and bed was comfy. Heat pump kept the room warm, but a little extra bedding would have been nice. Only green tea but no normal tea seemed odd. Staff were super friendly and helpful, and overall we left pretty happy.

On the plus side I was fortunate to have a room with a clean bathroom, others not so much. Location nice and central. The hotel had a good receptionist on at night, the lady in the morning seemed to be not too impressed if you asked her anything. Carpets needs a desperate clean, mattress protector, one sheet, duvet, and 2 of the 4 pillows dirty. Jug had burned milk in it. I asked the guy at reception for the dirt items and made the bed myself as he was on by himself, and he said that he didn't make beds. Parking is very scary.

The room I was placed in was very fancy and spacious! Really loved the atmosphere overall. Michelle, the receptionist who took care of my booking, was very friendly, professional and helpful during my stay! She went through the extra mile to provide me information regarding the local area! Will stay here again on my next holiday
