Service and atmosphere was great but food was dry and lacking X factor.

Enjoyed our meals. Very quiet on the Saturday we visited. Friendly staff

I have been to Armadillo’s Kaiapoi a few times now for large family gatherings. It’s a very relaxed atmosphere with no airs and graces so it’s comfortable. It wasn’t very busy. We were by far the majority. There was a guy playing guitar and singing and he was awesome, however, it was just too loud making conversation difficult. He had stopped before our food arrived so that made it easier to converse. They are very child friendly which is mostly why it’s chosen. The outside playground is so good and the activity pack is brilliant. the kids food was brought out first. I ordered the special this time which was a rump steak with a mushroom sauce. If I’m honest I was a bit disappointed that there weren’t more pieces of mushroom. The rump steak was cooked to my choice and my Dad’s was too (he likes his done more than I do), however it was rather gristly and those of with steak left decent piles of partly chewed meat on the plate. I wasn’t overly fond of the salad either. It is all me as I’m a bit particular but there was a small amount of lettuce and mostly it was a coleslaw rather than a salad. I’m not fond of coleslaw and would never order it. I don’t like raw cabbage and I loath raw onion with a passion and that seemed to be the main ingredients. The staff were lovely and attentive and managed our large group well. We had a wait for food but we expect that when there .is such a crowd of us. So, overall pretty good and comfortable and relaxed. Would go again. I had a kind of casserole with mashed potatoes on top last time which was utterly delicious. Ps in the pictures the cake is by The Sugar Room in Kaiapoi. Sam makes incredible creations. She’s an artist. The staff put it on a board and carried it with big grins to the birthday girl.

The chilli-cheese ciabatta bread is absolutely to die for! If bread and cheese are your vices then you will not be disappointed with that starter. The chicken tenders were really nice and juicy, the barbeque sauce was really good too. Plenty of choice drinks-wise so you'll definitely find something you like. The restaurant was very relaxed, the staff were kind and attentive. Perfect place for an easy dinner with mates.

Friendly service and food is just fine (bland) something is missing too much souce and too hot (might burn a tongue) needs something to complement other than gravy. Some spice is required for the souce in general.
