If you want the real deal great tasting Malaysian food and not very particular with the atmosphere, come and visit Chef Rasa Sayang! Great service by Maggie who not only offers her smile and cheerfulness but also offers information regarding the dishes. We ordered a big serving of Chicken rendang, Rotis, and Fried Kuey Teow. For the price paid, we even had leftovers to bring home. Our order could feed 3 people. Servings were very generous and flavoursome! I loved the crusty but soft and smokey taste of the Roti mixed with the Rendang. We can’t wait to come back and try their other dishes!

Small place, easy for 2-4 peoples. The fried Kuey Teow are expertly seasoned, offering a harmonious blend of savory, aromatic, and slightly smoky notes.

We found ourselves in Birkenhead again, and after having a great experience at Ala Turca, we decided to try something different. That’s when we came across Chef Rasa Sayang, a Malaysian restaurant I had seen recommended on Reddit. At first glance, the place didn’t look particularly inviting, and I almost considered switching to the Korean restaurant next door. But my craving for Malaysian food won, so we gave it a shot—and I’m so glad we did! The menu offered a great variety, and I chose the slow-cooked prawn chili on rice. The rest of my family ordered chicken nasi lemak, beef rendang, and prawn assam. We’ve had nasi lemak and beef rendang at other Malaysian spots in Auckland, but this was our first time trying these other dishes. When the food arrived, we were amazed at the portion sizes—huge servings, and all for under $20 each! The slow-cooked prawns were absolutely divine, and the beef rendang and chicken curry were packed with flavor. The richness of the curry and the depth of the spices were incredible. I’m so glad I didn’t give up and head to the other restaurant. Chef Rasa Sayang has easily become one of my favorite spots on the North Shore. From now on, I’d happily choose Birkenhead over Takapuna for a meal. Highly recommend!

*** Owners changed = Taste has changed *** This WAS our favorite Malaysian restaurant but not anymore. Taste has definitely changed. The sauce was way too salty and the ingredients didn’t seem to be balanced. We know how it tasted before but it’s not how it used to be. Also the food didn’t came out in balanced time of order. We did go on a busy time, but our food took 30 minutes while the order of the next table who came in about 20 minutes later than us came straight after ours as well as other customers orders. Our order wasn’t even complicated, just two single plates. We were very frustrated but no word was said. We would not be visiting again.

This restaurant is very average. The food is passable, neither impressive nor disappointing. While the prices are somewhat more budget-friendly compared to other similar restaurants, the overall experience leaves much to be desired. The service, particularly from our waitress, lacked responsiveness and warmth, failing to create a welcoming atmosphere. Our initial plan for a light snack took an unexpected turn when we discovered a minimum charge of $16 per person, which was surprising and not aligned with our expectations.

Excellent authentic Malaysian dishes. Highly recommend the Rendangs, and love their Nasi Lemak, one of my favorite dishes. As tasty as any I have had in NZ. An added bonus, it's very reasonably priced. Excellent service too. Definitely my go to if I have cravings for Malaysian cuisine. Will have to sample more of their dishes for sure.

Food here is good. Some dishes are fantastic however the customer service(only lady working there) is appalling. Totally cancels out the great food especially when it's cramped as it is. A smile would go a long way..... good for user eats I guess.

Delicious mi goreng and sweet and sour pork. One of the best mi goreng I’ve eaten. Very affordable. Place is small so it can be crowded sometimes but it’s worth the wait. Staff are an old couple who are very accommodating. For sure will come back here to taste their other menu.

First time went there. Always looks busy so had high expectations for this restaurant. We ordered prawns Sambal. Prawns were good size and also tasty. We also ordered flat rice noodles (I forgot the name of the meal) which was also good. Staff was friendly, price is good. I felt I was in Asia! I am missing this atmosphere. Hope covid-19 will be ending soon and we can go travel soon.

This little Malaysian restaurant is a little known gem tucked away in a little suburb on the Shore. If you did not go looking for it, you probably wouldn't find it. But they do the best deep fried blue cod in a slightly sour-ish, spicy, and yet light sauce. The tofu dish reminds me of a Malaysian snack called "rojak" which is tofu cubes mixed into a cucumber and sliced carrot salad along with lashings of chilli sauce and crushed peanuts - amazing. The sambal chicken wasn't too bad, nothing exactly worth mentioning but it did the job. Service is prompt and with a smile and food comes out, quickly. To get hot water refills for your jasmine tea, it's self service from the hot water flask next to the cashier's desk.
