I did the beginners wheel course and absolutely loved it. Jack is super friendly and helpful, and lets you express your own creativity and ideas while learning. So well worth the money. Jack also went well out of his way for a good experience, with welcoming everyone with tea and communal event at the end for firing, letting people stay behind often well after class finished to finish extra pieces, even when it wasn't acknowledged by the people (giving up a lot of his own time to allow them to do that!) very kind hearted. This is where you should come to learn the basics and the passion that goes into pottery. I made quite a fair few pieces, so even without the learning and knowledge I obtained, it would be worth the price just for the pieces you take home alone

We had a lovely time making pottery with Jack, he was welcoming and knowledgeable and helped us level up our pottery skills during our five week course. He really loves his craft and sharing it with others. We also had a great time with the wood firing process, it gave a unique characteristic to each pottery piece. We had a little dinner party recently to celebrate all the pieces we made and they looked great!

We had such a great time here! Jack is an amazing teacher, incredibly skilled in his own right and highly qualified in everything ceramic! He was a welcoming host and has an amazing knowledge of techniques and knows so many interesting facts and stories on the history of clay and pottery. The wood firing party was a real highlight and we are now hooked! Thank you!

My partner and I attended a bowl making class yesterday and we absolutely loved it! Jack Tilson was very welcoming and patient. He has a lot of experience, knowledge and passion for this art form. We used the wheel to make pots and then decorated the pots using some really cool techniques that Jack taught us. The location of the studio is an added bonus - it is in very close to the New Lynn train station but once you cross the bridge, you’ll find yourself surrounded by greenery and the sound of the stream is super soothing. I would 10/10 recommend this studio.

Jack's 'Flying Saucers' ceramics class was really lovely. It felt like we were in the heart of the Waitakere's hidden in Jack's space surrounded by native bush in New Lynn. This course is really great for beginners to have a play around and learn pottery techniques and the wood firing process. Jack is super knowledgable and is really accommodating to newbies, relishing in the process as opposed to the outcome. His space is a safe space to have fun which I really appreciated. His kiln is out of this world. Would highly recommend!

I would highly recommend Jack Tilson's Pottery School to anyone wanting to learn about the exciting process of wood fired ceramics. I am an intermediate potter so I enrolled in the 'Into Orbit class' and found it both informative and challenging. The great thing about the course is that Jack is so knowledgeable about the entire process so the course can be tailored to your interests and areas that you may like to gain a deeper understanding of. There are not many pottery courses where you can experience creating work from the very beginning- digging and processing the clay to forming it and then finally participating in the process of firing your own works!

This course was super fun, organic and I learnt so much. Jack is very welcoming and has a lovely, expert approach to teaching ceramics. The clay was often from the property and it was such a beautiful simple process. I can highly recommend the Flying Saucers class to anyone looking to get into making pottery.
