Riding in a coal engine train is an unforgettable experience. While it’s noisy and polluted, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The decorative lights and delicious food make it a truly enjoyable journey.

It was a nice experience at the Glenbrook Vintage Railway. It was good that we arrived early, around 5:30 pm, because after that there were long queues for tickets, food stalls, and even Santa. Be really prepared for long queues, even the toilets had lines. There were lots of people lining up for food, especially the beef sausage wiener. We brought our own food but still ended up buying some because there were so many food options to choose from. The train and station were beautifully decorated with Christmas lights, both inside and outside the train, which really added to the festive atmosphere. There was also a short festive balloons display. Riding the vintage steam train and smelling the smoke and steam made the experience feel authentic and memorable.

A Magical Coastal Escape and Christmas Wonder If you are looking to escape the city bustle without driving for hours, Glenbrook is an absolute treasure. My recent visit here left me feeling completely refreshed, and the photos truly don’t do justice to the peacefulness of this coastal pocket. The first thing that strikes you is the unspoiled natural beauty. As seen in the images, the coastline offers vast, open views where the sky meets the shimmering water. It’s the kind of place where time seems to slow down, offering a sense of tranquility that is simply unmatched. The highlight of this trip, however, was experiencing the seasonal magic of the Christmas lights. Seeing the area transformed by festive displays against the backdrop of the quiet harbour was spectacular. The lights add a whimsical charm to the rugged landscape, making the evening feel truly special. It is a fantastic way to celebrate the season with family, combining the raw beauty of New Zealand’s coast with a warm, festive community spirit. For those who enjoy photography, the contrast of the glowing decorations against the darkening horizon is stunning. It’s a very family-friendly spot; the atmosphere is safe and welcoming, maintaining a "local secret" vibe that is hard to find these days. The community feels quiet, and the area is immaculately kept. Glenbrook is a 5-star destination for anyone who appreciates natural scenery and a festive soul-recharge. Whether for the views or the holiday magic, it is highly recommended!

Glenbrook Vintage Railway for the Christmas train ride and had a great time. Plenty of food trucks and stalls, beautiful Christmas lights, and a really fun evening overall. Lots of parking, with volunteers helping manage it smoothly. A great place to spend an evening with family and kids and it was a great drive too. Away from city.

This visit was a birthday treat with high tea booked in the vintage train parlour car. We arrived early to look around the station while we waited for the train. The classic weatherboard station looks well preserved. The covered waiting area was full of people, some in vintage dress and really setting the scene. The train arrived and after the previous passengers were disembarked and the carriages were quickly cleaned, we boarded and were off. It's a short ride to Waiuku station through lovely countryside. The smell of the smoke from the engine fire was really nostalgic. The high tea was nice with croissant sandwiches, salmon and prawn on crackers and various cakes and sweet treats with a choice of tea or coffee. The journey back was interrupted by a stop for water where you could also disembark and see the workshop if desired. About 45 minutes on the train all up. Nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Great little outing! Train trip took around an hour with a couple of stop options. Nice little gift shop and some food/ drinks available although not an option for me with food allergies! But we took a picnic lunch along and ate there anyway. Kids would love the experience.

A lovely place for family. Some events suitable for kids will be held here. You can try 1900’s old train here. Booking is recommend. Come earlier for car park

Very lovely set up with lights, craft stalls, yummy snacks/ coffee stalls and of course, the lovely train ride! Missed out on the big guy Santa as it was raining hard the day we visited but overall, everyone had a good time. A place to take whole family.
