Did the Meerkat Close Encounter and was incredible. Such an interactive experience with very knowledgeable keepers. A great zoo to support which contributes to conservation efforts and animal well-being.

A small zoo, with some enclosures still needing an update, but some animals that aren't seen in other NZ zoos. Absolutely adored the snow leopard who came out to show off to the crowd. The central café "bananas" is too small with a very limited selection of food that we had to wait around for a long time to eat at, perhaps a buzzer would be a better idea as it was very crowded in the food area with everyone waiting for orders. The cafe at the entrance is much more relaxing and had more on the menu. Note food is very expensive so make sure you budget for it or pack a picnic. It would have been nice to see a bit more te reo Māori used in signs around the zoo, other than for toilets and rubbish bins. Overall a lovely day out.

Fantastic day watching all the animals relax in their own worlds. It was a treat to see the tiger so close, even came up to the window and the otters are always a joy. The staff are friendly, and have expert knowledge on the animals. I even saw one staff member volunteer to help push a wheelchair bound guest around while her husband took pictures, like their own personal tour guide. Would recommend going, especially if you love animals. The cafe food can a bit expensive, but is still very tasty

The zoo may be nice for kids, but for adults it was average. We saw a giraffe, a kangaroo, two Tasmanian devils who seemed more disappointed in their lives, a big rooster and a pig. The rest had to be hidden or put to sleep, no luck...

Beautiful walk and love seeing the animals. The zoo is well themed, we love that effort put into asia/africa/australia. We also do homeschool education talks here twice a year and they're great. 3 stars because the animals enclosures are small. As much as I love seeing exotic creatures, I always feel a bit sad and wish they'd spend more on extending room for current animals rather than building new enclosures for more variety.

The Wellington Zoo is well kept and very clean (we went on a Monday, 11am till 1pm). Totally impressed with the quality of the Animal enclosures especially the Snow Leopards. Just wait around a bit longer and they might just come say hello!

We love the Zoo! This time we had booked 2 encounters - 1 with the meerkats and the other with the tiger. Unfortunately the weather was dreadful, we were soaking wet just walking from the car lol sadly this meant the meerkat (who hate rain) were a no show, but the team there were happy to rebook us for a later date. By the time we got to the tiger the weather had cleared a bit and it was wonderful getting to see such a magnificent cat up close and feed her (chunks of meat with tongs, no fingers lost). Definitely a wonderful place to visit no matter the weather ;)

Really nice zoo. It's built into a hillside so there's a bit of uphill walking to do. We have been before but this time we went to see the new snow leopards and they didn't disappoint. There are lions and tigers and you can get close to the cute little blue penguins. Staff very helpful.

A truly amazing place and experience. We saw few endangered species and also a few which are hard to spot in the wild, e.g the red panda, a white lemur….. The place can be accessed by a bus or own car….. It is one of the well kept zoos that I have visited so far, across countries. Healthy animals who have ample of space to roam around , in a national environment is amazing. The best part is one can walk through few of the animal enclosures, like farm animals, kangaroo, bird enclosure. The zoo hosts a veterinary hospital that has glass walls and one can see and experience how animals are cared for. One of the must visit places in Wellington.

Nice zoo. You can get up fairly close to all the animals and normally get a good view. The terrain can be a bit steep in parts, so a pushchair for kids or possibly some said couple be required for the mobility impaired. Staff are great, very knowledgeable and present interesting talks throughout the day. Will with a visit. I would make sure you have protection from the sun as well
