Nice view with amazing sand dune beach, set in a natural and enjoyable environment. Although it is far from the city, the journey is worth the travel, especially if you plan to visit other nearby places to make the trip more rewarding.

Absolutely stunning beach. Come when it is not holidays and you can have the whole beach and black sands to yourself. There are rock formations to take wonderful scenic landscape style photos. The road to this beach is well paved and there is a toilet facility on site and plenty of car parking. A must visit and true hidden gem.

Such an incredible spot. If you need a drive away from Auckland, you should definitely add this to your list. The beach and the dunes are stunning and really makes your appreciate the world's natural beauty ✨️

Absolutely beautiful beach! Tons of sand dunes and black sand. The only thing I was disappointed about was the upkeep of the toilets, which were absolutely disgusting. Other than that, it is a beautiful place to visit!

A very rugged beach facing west to the Tasman Sea, on the Awhitu Peninsula. A little bit remote, but a good place for drone fishing, freedom camping or just hanging out. There is a camping area, toilets and picnic tables, and expanses of black sand beaches stretching north and south. Well worth a visit to experience the wild west coast of New Zealand.

Hamilton's Gap is a rugged but quite beautiful beach on the Awhitu peninsula' west coast with stunning seascape and landscape views. Māori name for this place is Waimatuku. Ancient Maori stories narrate that their great navigator named Kupe arrived at this place after Mokau and Kawhia harbours while travelling up the west coast. It is located about 90km away from Auckland CBD, easily doable under two hours at normal speed. Road is good, even the last stages of the access road is tar sealed so you can travel even in a small car. But beware of the last 20 or so km of the road is narrow and windy, with no centre line marking. In the end you will find a campsite enclosed between rolling hills, bordering a beautiful shallow stream. Then it’s just a short walk from there to the stunning black sand beach beyond. But you need to cross the stream to get to the beach so gum boots would come quite handy if you don't want to get your feet wet while exploring the beach. Dogs are allowed. This place got some sand dunes but not as good as the Pouto point huge dunes or Bethel's beach ones. The beach edges to long range of golden coloured cliffs which glitter and gleam at evening sunset. Sea is rough most of the time, typical to west coast coastline, so swimming or fishing may not be that safe most of the time. With gushing winds that usually tunnel through the Gap towards the landside along the little stream valley, camping in rough weather could become pretty challenging as the cold wind can get quite nasty. So, check weather before you decide to anchor here overnight. There are two picnic tables on raised grounds surrounded by a large grassy area. Also, you get two public toilets with one cold shower facility, a couple of big rubbish bins plus recently added mobile phone coverage by most networks.

A little slice of paradise very busy in the weekend. A nice getaway if you are in the hectic energy if the city. The sunset is amazing here

One of the most beautiful beaches I've ever been to! Really windy but in this scenery I don't care at all. Really hope to come back sometimes.

Stunning place. We camped over and enjoyed for the whole afternoon. Some loo’s and an outdoor shower. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
