Surprisingly solid caves! Donβt be discouraged by the early ones in the walk they get way better! The end of the trail isnβt exactly clear, thereβs one more cave just past the toilet, but once youβve seen that you can turn around or keep heading down the hill for more of the view. Easy trail, no need to wear boots or anything itβs all sand.

This is the car park where a few different trails begin as seen in attached photos of maps. I have attached a copy of the map in the car parl, and a copy of the map at Tunnel Point Campground. It took me 2h30m one-way from the car park where this Google pin is to reach the Tunnel Point camp ground whilst taking brief rests and photo breaks along the way. There is a signed path to return via the beach near Tunnel Point camp ground, which is signed as 1h30m, but I didn't take this return path.

An easy and enjoyable walk, perfect for families. There's the thrill of exploring the various-sized caves, some hidden and requiring a bit of crawling. The scenery is a mix of bush, dunes, and the dramatic coastline. Be prepared for a potentially rough and narrow gravel road leading to the carpark and remember to bring a torch for exploring the caves' depths.

The Whatipu Caves Track is a delightful escape for nature enthusiasts and those seeking an adventure close to Auckland. Whether you're exploring the hidden depths of the caves or simply enjoying the scenic beauty of the surrounding area, this trail is sure to leave you in awe. You can do a leisurely stroll along this track or do a challenging adventure by following the Gibbons track. I definitely love Whatipu as an escape from the city.

Just love this bush walk. The longest track is 2h45m- Gibbons. Much of the bush is the same but I'd say it's well worth the walk. The caves track is not too far. Perhaps in 20 mints ,it can be completed. The end of this walk is met by 4 caves, the last of which is huge.

Little walk to the caves from Whatipu camping area car park. Its a bit slippery when wet and some portions needs gum boots when wet.

In the start, it is a bit muddy and you have to cross 2 rivers, but there are not very deep. After about 25 minutes, you will see the first cave. Not really for beginners especially if was raining a lot, but still worth the visit!

This was amazing. There are about 10 caves all up. You have to keep your eyes peeled for secret ones hidden behind trees, and down the bank etc. Very wet in colder months. Don't go without waterproof shoes (gumboots) in winter, unless you want wet feet the whole time. My 6year old was fascinated though, and so was I. The hidden kauri dance floor in one of the caves was my favourite place to visit.

This wonderful West Auckland beach is at the end of Whatipu Road, the last 10ks is narrow twisting gravel so your car will get dirty (You must keep left on the road in NZ at all times whether tarseal or gravel BE SAFE). It is a decent walk to the beach from the carpark, lots of parking. Pack light with lots of hydration. The views throughout this trip are beautiful and the mountain range is fantastic. There is thriving bird life so respect any nesting. Be mindful of the wildlife, walk on the paths provided whenever possible. There are no shops for miles so be prepared, a store at Huia is about 15mins before with playground by the beach that maybe more suitable for kids and there is also a couple of dams worth seeing before that. Whatipu is nice and quiet for those needing the space. Please take what you bring with you. Do not leave your rubbish and only leave footprints. We love our country and want it enjoyed but respected.

Be very careful on the metal road over the mountain from HUIA to WHATIPU. Drive slow and safe, the road can be narrow and winding and there is always traffic from the opposite direction to consider.. Also be very careful if you choose to swim or fish of the rocks at WHATIPU, there are no LIFEGUARDS, it is a major harbour entrance and the currents are fast and TREACHEROUS!! Bring lots of fresh water and a full tank of gas, there are no shops or petrol stations here. There is a Camp Ground with toilets and local information available. Beautiful place with lots of history and many wonderful bush walks and scenic views.
