This is a memorial park for the Wahine which sank in 1968 with the loss of 51 lives as it was returning from Lyttelton. There is another memorial in the centre of Wellington in Frank Kitts Park on the waterfront consisting of the Wahine's main mast. The park was created on the site where the Wahine actually went down and there is a memorial plaque and the directional propeller of the ship.

Excellent! You can watch the ferries coming and going or simply gaze at the Remutaka Range. I find this view therapeutic.

Lest we forget. My mother remembers exactly where she were when hearing the news, age 8. A vital, harrowing stretch of water, which we take for granted

If you are looking for some wild coastline and the smell of the sea, this park is for you. On the ten calm fine days per year, nice picnic lawns too.

A very popular spot for diving and spending time at a lovely local beach! A small walk up the hill to the Ataturk Memorial and overlooking the harbor entrance to watch ships entering and exiting!
