I underwent surgery with Dr Woo-Sung Kim that was performed without the necessary expertise. The outcome left me in significant pain and ultimately led to a total hip replacement at just 31 years old. Throughout the complaints process, Bowen Hospital has been unhelpful and reluctant to provide information about how my concerns were reviewed or handled. I hope sharing this helps others seek full transparency and experienced care before making decisions. Edit: Thank you for your response. I would like to clarify that this matter is not resolved. ACCβs independent External Clinical Advisor (a senior FRACS orthopaedic surgeon) has since reviewed my care and concluded that the hip arthroscopy performed at Bowen Hospital fell below accepted New Zealand standards, that the CAM resection was inadequate, and that this directly led to early joint failure and the need for a total hip replacement at age 31. I have also never been provided with the βpeer reviewβ Bowen refers to, despite multiple requests, and this issue is now under investigation by the Privacy Commissioner. My concerns regarding informed consent, disclosure of results, and the adequacy of postoperative follow-up remain open with the Medical Council of NZ. I stand by my review. This has not been resolved.

Never in my life have I had such an accommodating health care experience. My nurse Louise was especially fantastic. I wasn't rushed or shamed for my intense needle fear, for once I was actually accommodated for. The anesthetist came and explained it all for me and offered me gas general anesthetic if I needed it, however I didn't as he made the experience so comfortable. Can not recommend enough.

Came in for a sedated colonoscopy with Dr Ben Griffiths. He was friendly and informative. Nursing team were lovely, talking me through how it all happens as were theatre staff. Post procedure food was decent and there was no dicking around, in and out, perfect!

Last night I was a patient at Bowen as part of the Otago Uni research into snoring etc. The test was aborted for various reasons but I wanted to bring to your attention the excellence of 2 of your staff (names unknown) but one young chinese chap was exceptional in helping me as was his manager, a young woman from London. Well done you two!

Best hospital experience I've ever had! I came in for a short day surgery. I had Lousie, Emma, and Elizabeth as my nurses, Chris as my anaesthetist and Dr. Kim as my surgeon - all were a joy to talk to and I could see that they really cared. I had the procedure explained to me clearly and discharging was quick and painless. Bonus, I enjoyed a yummy coffee and sandwiches in the day stay unit after the operation.

Having recently received a new hip. I can't fault anything, other than lack of wifi and cellphone coverage downstairs, (1st world problem.). The food was amazing, service from nurses and ancillary staff was superb. Keep up the good work team. Highly recommend

Worst "private" hospital ever. After a procedure that required a general anesthetic (fully under) and therefore 17hrs of fasting ahead of it, I awoke in a curtained room with 4 other people (one coughing & blowing their nose) to receive a fruit plate with: 2 grapes, 1 slice of kiwi fruit, 2 chunks of pineapple, 1/2 a plum and a triangle of watermelon. When I requested something more substantial so I wouldn't faint walking out, I was offered a gluten free cookie and a ginger beer. If I weren't so appalled, I'd laugh at how pathetic it all was. And I had the honour of co-paying $500 and god knows what the insurer was billed. Never again!

My toddler had eye surgery on both eyes here yesterday. We felt the care could not have been better. Our nurse was amazing and comforted us as she cared for our little girl. The hospital itself was warm and welcoming and the waiting area didnβt feel like a hospital at all. It was quiet everywhere and little touches like cloud photos covering the lights in recovery and art on the walls, made it feel more relaxing, which is great when your child is getting operated on. My daughterβs recovery took just a little longer than I had thought it would and we never felt rushed or pushed to hurry up and leave.
